I very recently got into hypnosis.. or at least I am trying to. I suffer with confidence issues and anxiety problems and I use audio recordings to hypnotize me and help me get over them.

I get the basic idea in hypnotizing youself.. I have come to the stage so far where I can relax my whole body and listen to the voice guiding me. However I don't feel like I have been hypnotized deeply enough yet. I suppose that will come with practice?

Also.. don't bash me but I am a light marijuana smoker. I do NOT need marijuana daily in my life, I am NOT addicted to it. It is just a plant I like to smoke every now and then to get into another state of consciousness and think things over or enjoy some music.

And I can't help but think that hypnotizing yourself while being under the influence of marijuana can make hypnosis SO much easier and deeper. I have not tried this yet and already searched the net but found no answers regarding this. Are there any dangers doing this? Is it indeed a way to get into a very deep hypnosis and get into your subconscious easier?

I've worked with a few people who've smoked marijuana prior to a session. Some of those did not tell me until several days after the session. The ones that told me prior to the session were those with medical marijuana.

In all of them, it appears that marijuana use can appear to help with the relaxation, BUT, negatively affects the RESULTS of the session. So it's a no-win.

Many people that have smoked marijuana in the past will comment that being hypnotized (with good depth) feels like being high, but much more "clear".

If you're having trouble getting depth, save some money (maybe don't buy pot for a couple months) and pay a professional hypnotist to help you achieve good depth, and, teach you self-hypnosis.

Thanks for the reply Patrick.

I guess your quote is bad news for me. But why does it affect the results negatively?

There can be a variety of reasons depending upon the individual. I don't know for sure and I don't think anyone else does either. People will have educated guesses and opinions. Educated guesses might be a waste of time.

In any intoxicated state, the mental exercises needed in a successful session will not be done with the same efficiency.. in the same way.. as they would in a sober state. Different neural pathways may be used. Depending on the extent of the intoxication, the targeted behaviors/neural pathways may not even be available.

Given, there will be those that talk about native cultures that used intoxicants to aid in different healing. Which is fine, can't argue that they were not successful. But, it can be said that the results are NOT reliable.

Ahh, I see.

Thanks for the response Patrick it makes sense. Guess I'll just have to practice sober then.

I've experienced over the years people trying to get deeperwith various different substances, I find as Patrick says it can help with the relaxation, however the clarity suffers. With a trained hypnotherapist you will achieve whatever depth is required for successful treatment. So take Patrick's advice and save some money and pay a professional to help you, then you can learn to achieve these results for yourself.

Hi

Okay let's look at this in a wider sense- in hypnosis we have something called a posthypnotic suggestion, or a conditioned response aka (AN Anchor) in effect a "light switch" connected to a feeling or a behaviour response- quick demo- think of a really nice memory a time when you felt really happy- at a basic level you just accessed a new state and hopeful felt good, yet here's a refinement think of the same happy experience and "While" you in that press your index finger and thumb together- now repeat 4 times- (We'll come back to this in a little while)

So let's say you have some one whoes smoked marijuana- now that person is in a whole body state- and are in effect in a very different "World" their whole perceptual filtering systems are processing information in a new way- yet "remember you are your state" press your index finger and thumb together- (notice what happens) if you went a long with the exercise from up there you should be feeling happy based on the conditioned response- "here's the trick" if you can remember a time when you had a really nice experience with marijuana- just bring that memory to mind, so go through in your mind in as much detail as you can- what happened notice the sensations as you think about this experience- scan the top of your head to the tips of your toes- and notice what you, felt, what you was hearing and seeing- and just notice how your experience is starting to shift- into that feeling of having smoked marijuana- press your index finger and thumb together on the other hand- while your thinking and feeling this experience-

So here's something, think of your best self hypnosis experience so far, how did you feel, what did you see, hear, notice, just by thinking about the experience in detail will allow you to re-access- and because your thoughts, are in effect anchors- posthypnotic suggestions, aka conditioned responses- if you organize and think about what you are and want to do with your hypnosis expereinces- is just think about how you want to use your body-mind system in useful ways.

Hi alphamind,

It's great to hear of another person entering hypnosis to help clear away negativity and problems in their life, as going straight to the source (the mind) is a powerful way to induce change. Way to go for you!

Your concern over whether or not you or deep enough is a valid one, as everyone (or almost everyone) believes they don't go deep enough at first. In fact, all they feel is relaxed, and not necessarily in a "deep trance".

Being relaxed can be a bit of a challenge for many in our modern world, so accomplishing that is a big step in using hypnosis. In fact, when we just relax, we enter into a trance-like state, where our subconsious becomes more receptive to suggestions and directions than it would when you are in a conscious, waking state.

Just being relaxed will help you become more open to the hypnotic suggestions you are listening to, and will help your brain change your behaviors, or in your case, anxiety. Being relaxed, I guess you can say, IS trance.

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. There isn't a wrong or right way to do it. Your experience will be unique to you, and all you have to do is go with it. Over time you might start to be able to go deeper into trance (relaxation), and become more receptive to suggestions.

P.S. There are other, and safer in my opinion, herbs out there that will bring forth a calming and relaxing effect. I use them as teas, because I don't believe smoking something, in any form, is that healthy for the lungs. I can do some research on some common herbs for you and let you know how you can make teas or infusions. Just let me know!

Hello,

I googled that same question: can marijuana enhance the hypnosis experience? I am no expert whatsoever but I am quite confident that it can. I believe marijuana can make your sub-conscious more suggestible. Intuitively it just makes sense! Certainly there is no harm in trying...

I think I will give it a go.

I would suggest doing some research into state dependent learning & memory, if you are going to use a substance in the aid of trance/hypnosis then you are going to create a reliance/dependency on marijuana to access the same resource levels and skills associated with the usage if marijuana.

Any professional would not foster or encourage such an act, and if you have little to no experience with hypnosis then there's a small chance of some negative reactions coming up anything from a small sense of paranoia. to a full blown freak-out.

So if you want to be irresponsible, just remember this "you did it"

If it has consciousness it's already in a trance.

Marijuana greatly affects a person's mind state.

If you hypnotize a person under the influence of marijuana, it would depend if that person would submit to hypnosis.

There are instances that a person under marijuana can be hypnotized easily, but others are on a different "trip" and their minds do not submit to hypnosis. So I would say it would depend on the subject :)

I used to smoke dope for years until I learned self hypnosis.
When smoking dope I found myself stuck in a rut.
with self hypnosis I can achieve all the states of mind that I smoked dope for( relaxation, happiness).
