Well, I've been making progress on the hypnosis-with-mp3 front, and thanks to a pointer from the therapist I was at this past week. Several times now, I've reached the point where my body felt like it was floating, or my body felt really tiny. I even once hit a point where my eyes opened on their own without waking me (and without instruction from the tape).
So, when I found out there was a family-oriented hypnosis show this weekend, I went in the hopes of getting to experience the lighter side of hypnosis.
I managed to get up on stage (first stage of hypnosis is nearly 2nd-nature by this time). However, I found myself a little disappointed when he did the progressive relaxation instead of the rapid induction. I simply didn't get all the way down in the few minutes before he planted the first trigger to re-induce.
At some point, he woke up those of us on the stage, while the audience went under as we watched, to pick out a few more people who failed (or didn't participate) in the initial weeding. He used the instant induction handshake methods to wake them and put them under. I felt more disappointed I didn't get to experience it, but stuck it out as best I could.
Again, he had us close our eyes and count down 3-1, then "Sleep!" (the trigger). Easy enough for me go back under, but since I did not achieve the proper state before, I was self-inducting instead of responding automatically.
At some point, I *did* reach point where my body was completely rigid, but at the wrong time. This was the first backfire. The hypnotist had us imagine a soft cushion to our side, and told us to allow ourselves to fall into it when he counted to 3. I visualized it, but on the count of 3, my body remained upright, despite everything feeling like dead weight (probably what I get for doing all my sessions upright instead of leaning back into a chair).
Ironically, the person to my left fell hard and fast (I became his cushion). All I felt was a solid bump, and could feel the weight, but my body didn't even budge and without a hint of muscle strain.
I *thought* it was encouraging, even though a part of me realized I'd failed the first suggestion. My body had gone rigid.
Next, the hypnotist had us imagine we were on a boat, fishing, and that we were about to hook a big fish. I imagined the fishing pole, and was holding the image in my mind.
*Snap!* My arms did not move. There was a momentary urge to grab for the rod, but my arms did not respond. They were still dead weight. After a second, the urge faded, and I was left sitting there unmoving as before. By then, I'd lost the image and ended up just listening to the hypnotist continue to lead the others.
Part of me was hoping he would realize I was locked into the wrong state, and come over and do *something*, since I was not responding. Either do a rigid demo, or help push me down where I needed to me. For my part, all I could do was just mentally drift along for the next 20 minutes or so until he did a "full" wake up.
Naturally, the trigger he used to re-induce did not even cause a flutter. I closed my eyes anyway, and just did a self-induction. I was able to go rigid again, but could not go deeper. A minute later, there was that *thump* again. A few minutes later, a 3rd thump. I have no memory of anything between the 2nd and 3rd thump, but I *do* know I wasn't asleep (if that makes any sense).
After the 3rd thump, I started coming out, and could no longer hold myself down. I ended up waking up, still in the spot I had started, and everyone else on stage was busy flirting with moonmen. *Finally*, the hypnotist comes over, and gently motions me to return to the audience.
I asked my sister, who went to the show with me, afterward. She confirmed that I did not respond to anything, and never moved, even with three different participants collapsing onto me during the show.
I find myself disappointed. It was an "almost but no dice" moment, and I did not get to experience anything other than taking a light nap. While I *could* go back and try again next weekend, somehow I know I won't get picked, and it is an opportunity lost.
Was there anything I could have done different? Should I even have tried to go back under on my own, knowing I'd already failed to respond? Should I have asked him to try the rapid induction on me when I first came out?
Any thoughts? |

You didn't 'fail' anything. If you knew nothing of hypnosis prior to going to the show, you would have a higher chance of doing the silly stuff. From your description, it sounds like your depth was more than he was able to deal with in a group situation like that. |

I can consciously tell myself it wasn't a failure, but it sure doesn't feel that way.
To me, it felt like I had not gotten beyond the 2nd stage, or I was "right on the edge" of going down further. I still had too much mental chatter going on (the drawback of having a short progressive relaxation deepening). It typically takes me 20-30 minutes or more of mental relaxation to reach a point where it feels like my body is going on auto-pilot.
I really was hoping the stage hypnotist would have done a rapid induction. The fact he used it on other audience members made me feel a bit cheated.
Or, he was fooled into thinking I actually had gone deep enough, or would reach the proper depth on my own.
I honestly don't know at this point. |

I just wanted to add the following:
One of the big reasons I am hoping to find a hypnotist who will do a rapid induction/deepening, is that it seems (to me anyway) that while progressive releaxation works (given enough time spent clearing thoughts), it gives me way too much time to think about what is happening.
One thing I can say for certain, is that the desire to experience deeper trance is very real and very strong. In fact, attending the hypnosis show seems to have increased the desire.
I can also say that being in front of an audience was a non-issue. In fact, even while sitting there in a light/medium trance, I was oblivious to the audience, except when they cheered or laughed. Even then, my only though was "geez, they're loud!"
I know that many hypnotherapists don't approve the use of deep trance for stage shows, but I really would like tips to help me "get it right" as a subject. What little of the show I did manage to see, the other participants seemed to be having a lot of fun.
One more thing: I just know there has to be something I am missing for the transition from "stiff and rigid" to "lucid and suggestible". My mind knows what it feels like, from the fact my subconsious has been briefly latching onto it as I am falling alseep each night since starting hypnosis. It just seems that for whatever reason, my conscious mind won't let go unless I spend several minutes wandering, without focusing on anything. |

email me directly and I'll send you a rapid (not instant) induction audio w/ a post-hypnotic for re-induction. |

You know, I've been thinking a bit more objectively about this past weekend, and I started recalling a few details that might have made a difference. I also did a bit more digging out on the net.
I thought abuot why I didn't slump over on the first suggestion. The state I was in might have been part of it (since I did consciously try to lean over), but one thing I read stated that many who are already seated upright and have properly balanced their weight will tend to stay upright even when the rest of their body goes limp. The mind and body "know" how to maintain that balance point with minimal effort.
As for the fishing? Well, I remembered it wasn't just about a boat and a fish. The suggestion was actually that you were in a fishing contest with a million-dollar prize. It occured to me at that moment that anyone already all the way "under" would accept it unquestioningly. However, upon reflection, I realized that it was when he mentioned the prize as the moment my mind baulked. A million dollars for catching a fish!? It occurs to me that if the prize he mentioned had been much smaller, my mind would not have objected, and it might have been just enough to allow me to become immersed (and thus slip into the proper trance).
I have decided to go back again this weekend or the next, if only so I can witness the whole show from the audience. I don't plan to volunteer this time; just sit in the audience and see if anything happens. In truth, I do hope I go genuinely under and get pulled up, but if I don't, I will wake myself immediately so I can at least enjoy watching.
P.S. Thank you for pointing me to that audio, Patrick! The faster pace definately kept my mind a bit more engaged, and the shorter duration means I don't have to set aside 1-2 hours of my day just to get more than 1 conditioning session in.
Also, whether it was intended to or not, listening to it keeps triggering memories of a recent family outing. For brief periods, I am revisiting moments from that day. The best way I can describe it was, I was "in" the scene, but it was as if I was merely a video camera, capturing the events in vivid detail, as they happened.
Very cool, and different from anything I've had happen before while listening to an audio. |
