I was talking to a friend of mine and he says when he does self-hypnosis; he gives his suggestions first, and then goes into the hypnotic state. Can anyone explain this to me? Wouldn't this just be positive affirmations, rather then hypnotic suggestions?

Giving the suggestions prior to the self-hypnosis is one way of doing things. I would say it has a smaller chance of success compared to receiving suggestions WHILE in hypnosis. But, it works for your friend.
Affirmations, mantras, prayer, meditation,and hypnosis are the same animal.
With affirmations the intent is to get the 'suggestions' into your mind via repetition. Repetition is also a hypnosis process. |

| By declaring your suggestions up front you allow the subconscious mind to take them and apply them once you are in trance, though as Patrick says, this would be more effective while actually in trance. One solution is to make a recording, you could even take another hypnosis recording and insert some additional suggestions. In fact suggestions in your own voice are more readily accepted than those in someone else's voice. |
