Hi there

I've been practising self-hypnosis for some time now - about twice a week for nearly a year, and I'm starting to experience that my suggestions 1) do not last that long anymore, and 2) are not that effective in combating my problem (which is a social fobia).

Is this a common thing?

Do you know of any people who have practised self-hypnosis for a long time, and who experience similar effects?

Hyp-fan,

Yes, over time self-hypnosis can sure lose it's effectiveness and strength. Self-hypnosis w/ suggestions will work AGAINST currently held behaviors. If the behaviors are relatively dominant, they aren't leaving.

Best results would be to see a competent hypnotist to address the behavior directly, then use your self-hypnosis to reinforce that work.

Ok, thanks for the answer. Damn, didn't think it was common that self-hypnosis would lose effect over time - are we talking about the suggestions of a single session losing effect, or the very concept of self-hypnosis that becomes less effective when frequently practised for a long time? - Important difference right there :).

I've got an appointment with my hypnotherapist - but it's in January (all booked). Should I refrain from using self-hypnosis up untill that point, because it might make me become even more immune to suggestions, or what do you think? :)

Hi

I have to disagree- on this idea that self-hypnosis suggestions- aware off- its not the way the the brain works- if we are to class a suggestion as a stimulus- then if you repeat the same stimulus or suggestion- what happens is after time it becomes automatic- and builds a stronger and strong trace in the brain- so it's not that the suggestions become less strong what happens is they habituate or become automatic- or streamline- they become apart of the way you think and feel-

If you would be willing we can put this to the test-

Now this is some what artificial yet it a very good demonstration of how suggestions- can become automated and conscious part of how we learn-

So what I want you to do is think of a good feeling- what ever you choose is ok - maybe confidence or joy or calm- yet what ever it is will be fine- so just for this lets say confidence-

sit up and if you was feeling confident or now how would you be feeling- notice that feel with you as you think about it- and what I want you to do is to the best of your ability see the word "confidence" in your minds eye- in your imagination and as you see it there feel the confidence in your body- and make it just a little stronger- and now while you are seeing the word confidence in ypur minds eye and feeling it press your index finger and thumb together and in a strong inner voice say the word confidence- and repeat this several times- over and over-

Then go for a little walk around the house- then in say 15 minutes press your finger and thumb together- and notice the confidence feeling coming back- now do this a number of time over the next 3-5 days and what you will notice is it will be come an automatic process-

And that what you will have found with your over suggestions- is that they have become streamline into your behaviors and ways of thinking-

I'm not arguing that suggestion hypnosis has to potential for long term change.

The question is can suggestions lose effectiveness over time. The simple answer is yes.

If the suggestions is being countered by pre-existing behaviors and situations in life, the suggestions lose strength. The pre-existing behaviors and situations essentially act as their own self-hypnosis suggestions.

If a person uses self-hypnosis to feel they are competent and useful, they can feel better. If they then go to their job and are told they are stupid and useless, the suggestions are countered and have lost effectiveness.

This may be an extreme example, but the point is true.

Also, if continuously needing self-hypnosis suggestions to maintain a balance, over time, the belief and expectation of the suggestions helping will deteriorate.

This is not just theory, it is documented information.

So one can't practice self-hypnosis for years on the same topic, and still be effective? Its effectiveness will ultimately deteriorate?

Depending on the person and their situation, yes.

If you need to practice hypnosis on the same topic for years, it probably means there is a behavior there that suggestion hypnosis is not changing. It needs something more to get that something 'out of the way'. Then suggestion hypnosis will have more influence...

Okay, damn irritating :). I've booked a schedule with my hypnotherapist - should I refrain from using self-hypnosis up until that point?

Hyp-fan,

If you were my client, I would say yes, you should probably stop until you see your hypnotist. If you see a reduction in the self-hypnosis's effectiveness, it is likely your mind will expect that to continue. You want to avoid your mind reinforcing that belief.

Best to take a break, start fresh and go at it again. Have you asked your hypnotist what he or she thinks?

Did he say that it should still be effective even after you told him you're experiencing less effectiveness? lol

My best guess:
His training may be limited to suggestion techniques which would mean that is all he has to offer.

Well, the thing is it's important to make changes to whatever might be causing the problem, and perhaps build a wall or some sort of filter so that does not reprogram your subconcious counter to your self hypnosis suggestions.

Patrick makes a good point that there may be counter programming going on, however as long as you can identify what is causing that, it is possible to find a way to prevent it from effecting you in a non-beneficial way.
