This is my first post here, I've been studing NLP and hypnosis for a while (on and off for 12 years). I just became a Certified Hypnotist and decided to start treating people for free to gain experience and get more comfortable with the application of years of theory and curiosity. I've begun to work with people helping them with issues such as smoking, weightloss, phobias, memory loss, ect.

So far I have been lucky and have had a 100% success rate. However recently a client of mine seemed to fall asleep. I'm not sure if he was really asleep or if they were just in a deep somnambulistic state.

he was responding very well with ideomotor finger movements for about 20 minutes and then stopped during the middle of some timeline work and did not confirm or respond to any more suggestions.

I began to count him out of the trance and he did not respond, I counted him out again and told him if he didn't come out I would not let him go this deep again and then I lightly brushed his arm with some papers I was holding. and he began to wake up, so I started to count him out again and he was fully awake.

He remembered about 50% of the session. He did not recall some of the stuff he responded to. I know he was in trance but I'm not sure if he was sleeping or not.

So my question is as the title suggests. How do you know when a client has fallen asleep and how do you wake them up?

Thanks.
Robert

Hi Rob

Whole body entropy, looks very, mush like sleep, and occurs, when the brain switching from Alpha/Theta arousal, and goes in the Delta level wave forms, Delta level waves are where the brain goes when the body is sleeping, the difference is in the gag reflex when you go in to real sleep the gag reflex, closes down, and the way in which we breathe, becomes deeper there is a very different sound difference, and the body does not hold its pose, when we are asleep. It can take from 7-17 minutes, for the adrenalin the get back into the body, from a deep trance.

It can sometimes be easier to take some one deeper, and then use fractionation, to bring them back up.

Some times it can also be because a part that as of the consciousness as not fully integrated, back into the body, when you do time limes, you do a part of the process from a detached view points, so something to keep in mind is making sure everything is being put back together, so saying something like, “ as you work on what you are working on, you can in your own time NOW, make any and all adjustments, that work for you in just the right ways, NOW as you do this NOW as you begin to come beck to the hear and Now you can start to feel you feelings of your body in the chair and as you Listen To the sound of My Voice NOW you can be right here, with ME NOW. Eyes open wide awake and so on.

Thank you for the response, I suspected it might be the Time line work, as he drifted much further when he disassociated.

I have another question if you don't mind.

I have been using the Elman induction on all my clients and I'd like to switch to an instant and/or shock induction with a suggestibility test conversion. However I'm a little nervous with these techniques because I have only done them on others that expect to be put under and know how it feels and what to do.

Have you used instant inductions on any new clients?

Hi Rob

I primarily use Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, in my work, Elman inductions are very good, yet I would not use shock inductions in a therapy context, only on a stage or in a training setting to demonstrate that they are many ways to induce hypnosis, I would also suggest if you don’t feel comfortable using any particular induction, then just don’t use it.

As for using instant inductions, the way in which I use my language, and tonal shifts, the only place for you to go would be in side now. And you learn new things in just the right ways that work for you.

As you can see I can make language, work petty well. Yet that very basic.

Thanks again.

Your patter sounds like the beginning of Bandlers handshake induction.

Have you used the handshake induction in therapy?

Hi Rob

I don’t class my work are therapy, I just don’t like that word. It offends me, I facilitate and awaken, and lead into possibilities for people to find there own resources that lead to change, I don’t have a “set” that I work with, I use raw data, and spontaneous pattern creation, which it uniquely designed for the person I am working with. I have used the hand shack induction a number of times, and found it to work well.

Wow, I like that definition, it is very similar to a mindset that I have been trying to develop with my work. I always felt that many people are intimidated by Hypnosis and NLP because they feel they are being controlled by the hypnotist (i.e. brainwashing, mind control, ect..) So I really wanted to find a way to explain hypnosis in a way that made them feel they were in control.

Lately I have been describing it as a way for me to teach them how to communicate with their subconscious. it's been going well however your definition has given me something to think about.

How long did you train/practice for before you felt you comfortable enough to customize your approach.

I have found that if I do something to surprise them when they wake up, that they very rarely ever fall asleep on me again. You know, something like shave their head or have them wearing their underwear on the outside of their clothes when they wake up.

Ok, that was a little humor for the new year...

Happy New Year!

Hi Rob

My Journey started with NLP/Hypnosis in 1993, and there as not been a day in that time where I have not read, thought or used the tools and ideas, in some way, I just got that language and hypnosis are the same thing run through the same nerves system, right from the very beginning, so just started playing attention to the way language elicits responses, and worked from there.

I got in to NLP and Hypnosis as I had a real tough time with reading and writing, and used that the tools in NLP and Hypnosis, to educate my self or to re-educate myself. Might be a better thing to say.

I have a personal library that host 3000 plus books, on NLP, hypnosis, psychology, psychiatry, neuro-physiology I have over 10,000 hours worth of audio-visual, data related to the above themes, I have read 1000’s of articles,

So I have come to Hypnosis from a unique vantage point.

Play with what you know are comfortable with, then make little incremental changes, here and there, and as up build confidence, the it wont be too, long before you can just go with want feels right and you will do fine.
