Can anyone define self-hypnosis? Are there any link between self-hypnosis and subjects who suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder?

Hello,
You can take a look at the HypnosisOnline.com FAQ's for definitions and links to more information on Self-Hypnosis.
What kind of a link are you looking for or do you think exists between self-hypnosis and Attention Deficit Disorder?

It can be tricky to diagnose ADHD. There are other causes for example, Depression that can also cause ADHD-like behavior. Various methods of tests are used to investigate any signs of ADHD before a conclusion is reached.
Hypnodoc,
Thank you for your reply and your question relating to the topic.
If a child for instance, sitting in a classroom "phased out" in a dreamlike state...would one refer to that as self-hypnosis or as a possible sign of ADHD?
We have to look at each case within the context of the situation. Seeing that self-hypnosis, like hypnosis in a session with a hypnotherapist, can be seen as a process that assist the subject to relax, etc. Is there any possibility that "a phased out kid" might be labeled with a sign of ADHD, when it is in actual fact a form of self-hypnosis that is applied by the student in order to escape a boring situation?
I do know that ADHD has a physiological origin, but in some instances, are we not reaching for the prescription pads too easily -even in the case of ADHD?

Hello again and thanks for the clarification.
Now I see where you are going with this. The thing that threw me was the term "Self-Hypnosis" which in this case is most likely better termed as "Accidental Hypnosis" or "Environmental Hypnosis" or maybe even "Walking Hypnosis" would be better. A phenomenon that can occur at any time and in many environments (while driving a car, reading a book, in a lecture, etc.).
Most people use "Accidental Hypnosis" to mean the occurrence when a young child is told structured messages by an authoritative figure which results in their being programmed (a visit to the Principles office, a stern lecture from a parent, etc.). You can find some good examples of that here: http://www.infinityinst.com/articles/accident_hyp.html
More common is the term "Environmental Hypnosis" - A state of hyper-suggestibility, triggered when an individual is in the presence of an overabundance of message units coming from their environment. This causes the person to try to escape the intense input. A kind of "walking hypnosis."
Perhaps these terms can help you find some better search results online and in books. I hope this helps and please keep us up to date on your findings and thoughts on this. |

Your question tends to suggest we diagnose, when in fact we cannot do so. ADHD etc are medical terms, and should be diagnose by a doctor as is proper. Anyone being asked as a lay practitioner to work with an ADD client, should ensure that the prospective client has been properly diagnosed, and the doctor aware of any intervention you intend to offer. FAilure to do so could result in many countries, in a charge of practising medicine without a licence. |
