The whole area of exploring, understanding and using unconscious signals is fascinating. There is something I would like to find out here...
Milton H. Erickson conducted an experiment with the aim to explore non-verbal components of communication. A group of few hearing impaired persons with lip reading ability were set with their becks turned to the blackboard. Another group of non hearing impaired peple set facing the blackboard. Pictures of geometric shapes were presented there on the blackboard, while second group was comletely scilent, not saying anything nor moving their lips. The accuracy which lip reading group had with pointing out which shape is shown was astonishing, far beyond gues chance. In despite the fact that there was no apparent lip motion or anthing obvious, reading the shapes from the faces was apparently present. Erickson used results of the experiment to improve his work in terms of communicational elements that everyone produces but is not neccessarily aware of.
This is all I know about this interesting experiment. It would be really great to find out more. What were Erickson's conclusions, was this exploration continued, were there any similar experiments ???
Does anyone know more about this experiment or an informative surce?
I checked "Complete Works of M.H.Erickson" found nothing there, neither in "Experiencing Hypnosis" by E. Rossi.
If someone knows about similar experiments by other authors and conclusions, please share.
Basically what we talk about here is sensibility to details that we all disclose with our bodies, particularly face and which can be abounding source of information.
Acuity for uncounscious cues is extensively effective tool in communication, therapy and entertainment. That's what some entertainers, like Derren Brown employ with fascinating results.
???

Yes, fascinating subject and experiment, depending on the details of how it was conducted. It would be nice to see if those results are repeatable. Though I'm not sure about the validity (or even existance) of this particular experiment, the general idea that there are many communication elements we "emit" that we aren't consciously aware of is very solid as far as I'm concerned. The need for individual calibration comes in at some point though since I don't think all of our unconscious cues are universal.
I love watching Derren Brown as well.
Where did you hear about the Erickson experiment? |
