After fifty yrs. of practice and teaching, I have I have reached the conclusion that human transformation through hypnotherapy or any other means remains a mystery. Rather than attempting to penetrate the mystery, I celebrate it !
I recognize the need for research and encourage the researchers, but in my lengthy career, I have seen very many theories and methodologies gain wide acceptance and then fade into obscurity.
My work, Transforming Therapy,® is the product of my passion, acquired knowledge and experience, combined with my belief in an inner creative power as our connection to a "Higher Power", I believe that the creation of a highly successful hypnotherapy practice is far more an art than scientific practice. and that the best therapeutic artistry is developed by comprehensive training with teachers who have achieved widespread recognition by their peers as Master Trainers." "I believe that the creation of a highly successful hypnotherapy practice is far more an art than scientific practice. and that the best therapeutic artistry is developed by comprehensive training with teachers who have achieved widespread recognition by their peers as Master Trainers."
IMO Gil is right both in his views and in the way that he has concentrated on, and dedicated himself to, providing appropriate training over many years for those who wish to become hypnotherapists. Far too often, people who are interested in becoming hypnotherapists are rapidly taught all that they need to know in order to be able to COMMENCE a practice, but they are not taught enough to SUPPORT a practice. Gil's training certainly equips people in the best way to be able to support a practice.
It may interest you to know that Sigmund Freud agreed with Gil that the acquisition of an appropriate level of hypnotic skill was a far from easy task; and, in particular, Freud stressed the importance of both learning from the direct observation of expert hypnotists at their work, over an extended period of time, and from extensive rehearsal and personal practice. In 1891, in a very positive article on hypnosis written for a German medical encyclopedia/dictionary, Freud had this to say:
"It would be a mistake to think that it is very easy to practise hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. On the contrary, the TECHNIQUE of hypnotizing is just as difficult a medical procedure as any other. A physician who wishes to hypnotize should have learnt it from a master of the art and even then will require much practice of his own in order to achieve successes in more than a few isolated cases. Afterwards, as an experienced hypnotist, he will approach the matter with all the seriousness and decisiveness which spring from a consciousness of undertaking something useful and, indeed, in some circumstances necessary. The recollection of so many cures brought about by hypnosis will lend his behaviour towards his patients a certainty which will not fail to evoke in them too an expectation of yet another therapeutic success. Anyone who sets about hypnotizing half sceptically, who may perhaps seem comical to himself in this situation, and who reveals by his expression, his voice and his bearing that he expects nothing from the experiment, will have no reason to be surprised at his failures, and should rather leave this method of treatment to other physicians who are able to practise it without feeling damaged in their medical dignity, since they have convinced themselves, by experience and reading, of the reality and importance of hypnotic influence." |
