| I seem to be stuck in my progress with learning hypnosis. I need help with deepening my trances. I can easily put my friends into a light trance most of them will experience catalepsy, usually I can get this effect in the eyes every time and the arms and legs most of the time. The people that I've been practicing with say that they enjoy the hypnosis a great deal, sometimes asking me to perform hypnosis without me expecting them to do so, which tells me I must be doing something right. I have also been able to describe certain sensations such as a warm feeling or tingling to minimal effect, but that only works sometimes. I have never been able to induce amnesia, anesthesia, or have any post hypnotic suggestions stick. My girlfriend I can put into a light trance almost immediatly because I've practiced with her the most, even though she only takes seconds to put into a trance, I can't seem to get her to go any deeper. I imagine that there is some technique that I don't know that will get me to that next level of trance, something that I've missed in all my reading. I'm sure there is someone out there that can help me reach that next level. |

Hello Rebard, It appears that you are hypnotizing friends for practice. They are aware that you are a novice and the old fears of "deep Trance"(controlling my mind) are probably still present in their subconscious. In addition they lack the motivation of expecting relief from suffering (pain or painful situations)
or the thrilled expectancy of reaching an important goal.
Until recently, the old belief prevailed that the therapeutic response of the client was linked to the depth of trance achieved during therapy. This belief is based upon another false idea that the subject goes into trance and is deepened to a supposed depth that guarantees results. Therapeutic response comes from the client's readiness for change, the relationship with the hypnotherapist, the client's willingness to give up secondary benefits and the Grace of God. "Depth of trance" is more correctly named "quality of response". So-called "depth" is controlled by the prevailing brain wave patterns and is subject to instant change created by input from the therapist and the clients emotionalized response. Improve the result by giving up the belief that "the deeper the trance the faster the result"

| I believe I see what your saying, and I think your advice will help me a little but it still doesn't completely solve my problem. I am not really getting results. My friends that I am working with all have problems that I am working on, smoking, weight loss, things like that, they have aproached me knowing that I am learning hypnosis. So they are in fact expecting relief from something. Perhaps they are afraid that I will use mind control on them, but I doubt that is the case. Maybe it is my belief that there is some trick to hypnosis that I have not yet learned that is inhibiting me. Whatever it is, I know someone on here can give me a solution. |

Actually this advice is completely right on the money.
The fact is (you say it yourself) the people you are working with all know you are "practicing" or just learning. If you were working with someone who "only" knew you as a professional hypnotist you would most likely have a much better response to your sessions. The fact that they know you personally may well be the thing holding you back. This is not anything you can change other than your working on people you do not know. Once you are a Hypnotherapist there will be a higher level of respect and authority given by the client. Imagine if the Hypnotherapist started the session with a speech saying "I am pretty new at this so I am going to practice on you so let's see if anything happens, OK?" I can guarantee the session will not go too well.
Try this - have your friends bring someone new into the group for the purpose of being hypnotized by their "friend who does Hypnosis" (have them not say anything about practicing part). I am sure you will find you will have better results.
It is rare that you will find a Hypnotherapist that works with their own family members or anyone they know well. Being a stranger has its benefits in this situation of authority.

| OK this makes it much clearer. I think I see whats going on now and I will do exactly as you have both suggested. Thanks for the advice, I also looked at that other thread and that helped clear things up as well. |
