I helped a 32 year old client with severe anxiety and stress At first the client was cooperating and we established it was not caused by anything in his childhood. As per normal he thought hypnosis was a magic cure and when results were not there immediately severe resistance set in. his personality type revealed this, that he gets very despondent if things don’t go his way immediately. At first I was taken back by this severe resistance but then played the game, waited for change and worked with him on more clear goals. Bottom line is his stress is created by fear, fear of the unknown, he has no goals, he does not know what to do, has no self confidence, can’t forgive himself for leaving his life behind to travel, his girlfriend of ten years has broken up with him,he wants to quit smoking but fears he will stress more, He likes to be mothered and has a high dependency on other people or familiar surroundings. I have since in hypnosis got him to forgive himself for past mistakes and desensitized him to the anxiety attacks taking place in the morning and started a positive relearning process. For homework he has to make a clear goal / action list. My next step is to get more self confidence and positive thoughts going, to help with his goals. I have not suggested that he quit smoking yet as this will overload the stress level. He still has to deal with the broken relation ship but, the subconscious can deal more effectively with one clear goal at a time. I know that hypnosis takes its time to work but, he says that the stress levels in the mornings are still as bad and that he still stresses about the same fears. He has a lot of problems but, only one at a time can be cured. A possible problem in this case might be that he is my younger brother. Am I on the right course of action here? Any feedback positive or negative will be appreciated. Any help or course of action will be appreciated. This is a very good and informative site !!

Hello,
Nice story - almost like a novel where you keep the best part for last. You start off talking about "your client" and then end up telling us he is your younger brother.
I submit that you may just be too close to the situation for you to get any real control over the issues. In fact, you may be so close to him that you may even trigger or aggravate the issues somewhat.
In fact, hypothetically, how could he tell you, his brother if you were somehow part of the cause of the main problem he is experiencing? Maybe he wouldn't reveal the cause from childhood so as to not hurt your feelings. You see where this can get sticky.
In most cases, Hypnosis Therapists will avoid working with their family and people they are close to. There are a lot of other things going on between them other than what would normally be between a Hypnotherapist and his client.
Your desire to help is a good one but you may want to turn the whole thing over to an outside Hypnotherapist as they will have a cleaner perspective on everything and he may feel better about discussing issues that just might be too "close to home" to talk about with his older brother.
I am assuming he is not on medication or seeing a doctor for any of these issues. If he is, then you need to plan a course of action with the doctor and maybe not be in the middle of this at all.
I hope this helps. |

Hypnodoc hit it right on the mark. I don't even need to know how good you are or skilled, the fact that it is your brother, tells me you will almost certainly fail, and yes even make the situation worse perhaps......I have a daughter who is obese, but would never attempt to help her lose weight. I would pay for someone of lesser skill to help her though, because relationships interfer with quality therapy, and someone with less skill is likely to be more successful than I..... |

Gentleman thanks for the input and help, you confirmed my fears. My brother lives in a different country (at the moment lives with me), His problems started a long time ago and after trying all the possible therapies out there finally turned to me/hypnosis as a last resort (which is the norm in our line of work). My parents does not know what advice to give him anymore or what to say to him. Lots of people have given him so much advice over the past but, people in such an emotional state hardly absorbs any of this at all. I guess my desire to fix the problem might not be ideal. My reasoning behind this is that I would not like to do all of this again over the phone in a few months time. He has given up drink and drugs as he has now realized that it has a huge negative impact on him and said that he is scared that he would get hooked on it. He is thinking of giving up smoking. I have referred him to someone else over the weekend and it seemed to be positive. I had a different hypno-therapist in mind and will take His case to her. |

You were fighting an uphill battle and over the phone yet... yikes! This way is not only going to be better for your brother but also a lot easier on your own mental health. When you are this close to the situation it is very difficult to separate yourself from the issues - best to leave it up to a third party.
You may also suggest to him that he join a yoga class. Relaxation, control and calming of the mind - this really works hand in hand with hypnosis for stress.
