I remember there was a time when I was not comfortable with the whole idea of "trance" and certainly not hypnosis. I have heard people say that they are scared of being "hypnotised" and to some degree I can also relate to this. However last year I had a lot of emotional negative upset and it left like someone had punched my heart. The emotional pain was present with me constantly for 3 months. I tried several things but the pain was still there. I felt desperate and so I tried "hypnosis" tapes and a lot of the pain lifted. I was really curious and thought what would happen if I had a Hypnotherapist, hypnotise me. I discovered I was very "suggestible" and had a profound experience, so much in fact that I am now studying hypnotherapy. I thought to myself, how is it that I could have experienced what I experienced during hypnosis?? Was this really hypnosis?? (some sensations I felt were vision change when my eyes were open, spinning feeling, arms lifting on their own, unaware of my body, body and emotions being incredibly sensitive to any suggestions) sounds strange but true ! Some main explanations to my experiences 1) I was ready emotionally, I had no fear I was looking for anything to stop the pain 2) Rapport. I had trust, confidence and respected for the hypnotherapist. 3) I wanted to feel something profound to happen. 4) The mind is very powerful, if you believe it subconsciously, it usually happens eg the self fulfilling prophecy (projection and perception) 5)After having such good experience with the tapes I wanted to show the hypnotherapist that I was good at this.
Still believe rapport is most important aspect to any therapy |

Hello Krystine, All of your sensations are some of the many "kinesthetic delusive" feelings that can occur while in trance. You evaluation of your experience is right on. Gudonya Mate! Rapport comes in two forms; the non-hypnotic form derives from the therapist's appearance, voice, size, gender, manner, surroundings and the clients'subconscious memories. The IN-trance rapport is a phenomenon that creates response--the client feels like doing what is suggested--provided the suggestions do not create conflict with character attitudes, moral principals or religious beliefs. When these two aspects of rapport merge in a unified force-field, the results are often amazing. The combined force forms the RELATIONSHIP-one of three important factors in creating change and even transformation! The other two are; READINESS FOR CHANGE and WILLINGNESS TO GIVE UP SECONDARY GAINS. real or imaged benefits being sick, holding neurotic and negetive beliefs about their relationships and their life in general.I have taught Master Classes in Sydney on five separate world tours.Margaret O'Brien (Tomko)in Concord (2137) is a special friend. Not an uncommon experience for those using the services of a good practitioner I would say. As to raport being the number one aspect of hypnosis, I am not sure I can allow that to pass. Raport is indeed important, and will be the aim of the experienced practitioner, but experience knowledge and skill are still the main requirements of the best, and raport is just a by product....Raport allows me to send the client into the trance state it's true, but what I do while they are in that state is much more important to the results I get, and of course takes 99% of the work and study to achieve........I am glad your experience was so rewarding, and wish you luck in your future studies. Thank you Gil for the feedback and info
There is also another aspect of trance and rapport that I have experienced and read. If there was good healthy positive rapport before trance, an interesting thing occurs in trance, the "subject" wants to please the hypnotist. The choice for the subject is always there, but if the relationship is positive, the desire to please in trance is likely to be there as well. That is why I feel that one of the reasons rapport and trust are important in hypnotherapy. One reason for this may be that the feeling of hypnosis can be very relaxing and enjoyable, and you certainly do not want the therapist to take it away from you. The feeling is too good!
Experience is also a very important aspect. Easy to hypnotise but what do you do while they are under. The therapist with little experience may need to refer clients that are believed to be outside the therapist's capabilities and put the client's best interest ahead. But even the best advice/guidance may not be taken/followed if rapport is not present.
