I have a lot of information on my website, so I'll be brief here.
When person gets depressed, he becomes, for lack of better words, self-centered - the rest of the world is now out of the picture because whatever happened that caused the depression, to that person feels that it pushed him inside and that he is to a lesser or greater degree stuck there. The person may be unwilling or unable to find the exit.
When you are depressed, your breathing is shallow and one's life-force is getting stuck. Activities that stimulate the movement of energy - whether jumping up and down and yelling "hooray", or going out dancing or engaging in some form of intense physical activity will get the energy moving.
For a long term change, the person will have to change the way of looking at the perplexing issue and either engage in activities that help the person focus outwardly (e.g. helping others feel better in some way, will help the person to feel better about himself i.e. the person will get out of self-centeredness) or engage in activities that take the person inwardly but on a higher level (e.g. in the East when a person gets fed up with the outer life and the other life begins to feel meaningless, the person is considered to be ready for spiritual pursuits and the discovery of true meaning and one's purpose in life). |
