Hi all
I am interested in experimenting with somnambulism through self-hypnosis. I am already capable of self-hypnosis to a certain extentI just have not been able to reach somnambulism by myself.
After reading about the Elman induction method, it seems like that method might be helpful to me for two reasons: one, because of the type of deepeners used, and two, because of the straightforward method of testing.
What I would like is to train myself so that I can reach a somnambulistic state on command. That, of course, requires that I first GET to somnambulism, and then train myself with a post-hypnotic suggestion (cant enter it unconsciously without knowing what it IS).
So what I was thinking is that if I can self-hypnotize myself (not self-hypnosis, but using audio) into a somnambulistic state using the Elman induction perhaps, then I should be able, once In somnambulism, to instruct myself to remember the feeling and instantly enter it upon a command (which I can already do with light-medium hypnosis).
Does anyone have any suggestions for audio/mp3s that might help me in this?
And on a hypothetical noteit occurs to me that the tests Elman suggests would be difficult for me to perform on myself while in somnambulism. Or at least, thinking about the tests would make it easier for me to fake it, and then I would not actually be in somnambulism. Sodoes anyone have any suggestions of tests to perform on oneself for somnambulism? I thought that the eye test might work, as well as the muscle control testbut being myself, I cant check my own eye muscles to see if they move, I cant pinch myself, and so on. Any suggestions? |

While somnambulism is a subjective experience, I think you might find that once in it, it is not something you are particularly lucid in, and therefore once there you a likely there till ready to 'wake' or return to reality. In other words it would not be like flicking a switch going in and out at will. In fact, I would say will and conscious awareness need to diminish to achieve somnambulism. This paradox, therefore, may make what you wish to achieve rather impossible. In fact, once there, you might only realise you were there after the fact, rather that coinciding with the fact. Anything that relaxes you to the point of a somnambulistic state, assuming you are predisposed to such, should help. However, not everyone experiences somnambulism in hypnosis, and in fact most people don't. You also don't need to go into somnambulism to achieve therapeutic goals, thankfully.
Also, Dave Elman spoke about these things in the 50's in a universal way, as though all people achieved somnambulism and even used the term coma state. I am not sure if these ideas are helpful for those getting to know what hypnosis is all about.
I hope this helps in your exploration of the very power state of hypnosis.
Regards,
Jeremy |

Hi Jeremy!
That indeed is helpful information, thank you! I hadn't considered the in-process awareness aspect. Good point.
That said, Im not particularly concerned with being able to instantaneously reach the somnambulistic state, just in cutting down the time needed to do so (once I can, obviously). The test processes for depth of hypnosis alltogether seem to take about 45 minutes...Id like to be able to not just reach somnambulism, but train myself to reach it within maybe 15 minutes, otherwise I cant usefully experiment with it.
That said, I also am not too concerned about awareness in the state...I want to reach it for the purpose of dream induction and waking hallucinations, both of which seem to require that state.
The way you phrase it sounds like you are among those that do not believe everyone is capable of somnambulistic hypnosis...may I ask why? I am a good dreamer and have very detailed lucid dreams at times, which I hear is very similar to somnambulism... |
