Is there anyway hypnosis can help me with negative thought patterns.
Long story short, I have just recently become afflicted with some moderate depression and anxiety. I have had an episode about 4 years ago that lasted a few months, but this time I kind of let it get the best of me.
I am starting to feel better and getting back to my old self, but I can't let the thoughts about the past month's terrible feelings go and it is causing me to ruminate and think about negative things way too much.
When I was feeling my lowest I started researching all sorts of mental illnesses (bad idea I know) and now I can't shake the idea that I could possibly, one day, become a basket case and lose touch with reality.
I know this is irrational to think about so often but it plagues me. I will feel fine and then something will spark this thought pattern and I will get stuck in a cycle of it for a few minutes, several times a day.
If I could just 'forget' or stop these thought patterns I am sure I will be better off.
Can hypnosis help me accomplish this?
I started to see a therapist who is also trained in hypnotherapy, but he is more of a 'classic' therapist and says he only using hypnotherapy to augment traditional therapy. I asked him about the possibility of helping me 'shake' these thought patterns or help me re-imprint the memories of the last month or so and he said he "would think about it," but didn't seem to enthusiastic about the idea.
I think I might want to see someone whose main area in hypnosis.
At the core of everything I thnk I have a phobia of mental illness. When I was a small child I heard about a great uncle who was in an extended stay inpatient mental health facility and it scared the **** out of me. Even as a young person I thought, "I hope that never happens to me."
I later found out that my great uncle wasn't schizo or anything but rather had a long standing substance abuse problem, but that revelation did nothing to ease the thoughts this time around. I can't stop thinking, "what happens if I lose touch with reality? what would that feel like? is that happening right now?"
It is all probably driven by my health anxiety, so that is perhaps something I would like to work on too. If I can get over my mental health and health phobias, I think I would be in a better place.
So, to all you Hypno experts; is this something you think you could help with? Is it possible to use self hypnosis for this or Skype sessions? I just want to find the best hypnosis expert, no matter their location.
Some info on me: I am 30 years old, never had any sort of mental health issues (other than mild-moderat depression a couple times throughout my life). I have done some self hypnosis within the past month that has helped me relax and had one in-person session (last week) for 20 mins, to help me relax that focused on some anxiety.
Any information would be great! I am looking for the Eternal Sunshine treatment:)
Thanks! |

Hi, To answer your question, yes, a good therapist should take into account what you think is the problem and help you to explore this with hypnosis. Once you have resolved the actual problem, or problems, the thoughts will go away. The trauma of what happened over the last month can also be another cause of the negative thoughts. This too will probably need to be resolved, and some kind of hypnosis is always the better and more thorough way resolve such issues. The process is about working with the memories that hold the negative emotions in a way to find resolution and activate a different more adaptive (and positive) reaction. You need to find a good therapist to do this, one who takes an emotionally focused approach. Mainstream therapists tend to try to get you to change your thought patterns consciously - easier said than done.
I hope this helps. I wouldn't try Skype sessions; they're not as good as being face to face with someone in the room. Try to find someone locally, but you might need to hunt around. Where are you located?

Thanks so much for the reply. I agree, the past month has been traumatizing to say the least. Never in my life would I have thought that someone 'mental' could put me down for so long. I've broken bones, had colds and infections but never did it ever occur to me something non-physical could do so much harm. I think that in itself is partially terrifying to me. I never was the type of guy to do emotional self checks, ever. If I was tired, I was tired; if I was dizzy, I was dehydrated; not because I was sad or depressed (it's silly really, and I hate thinking like this recently). So, yes, I think the past month is something I need to consider as well.
I am actually in the US. NJ, about 45 mins from NYC. I would really like to find someone in my area though, outside of NYC. It is always so expensive and such a hassle to get into the city. Any colleagues in the area?
My therapist is good and all, but I just have that feeling he doesn't want to deeply explore or utilize hypnosis. I am ok with that, but I want to explore hypnosis to it's full potential.
PS- as an expert what are your thoughts on self hypnosis for this? Or hiring someone to recored hypnosis track specific to my issues? I love doing the self stuff at home in bed and just getting relaxed and zen like. |

Your best getting some self hypnosis techniques from your hypnotherapist who knows you. To be honest, I would try an Emotionally Focused Therapist - this is always your best bet.
You can try the Centre for Emotionally Focused Therapy in New Jersey on Google.
You can ask which ones do Hypnotherapy, as this is used in Emotionally Focussed Therapy. It is a very deep therapy that will get you to the bottom of everything.
