Problem, in short: My subject goes into trance too quickly and too easily, often accidentally.
Background:
I have done LOTS of trance work with my roommate over the past three years. She has PTSD and anxiety issues from being beaten and raped hundreds of times by her older brother over the course of twenty years. In the early days we set up hand signals and verbal commands to help her go into trance quickly as a way to get around her frequent panic attacks.
The hand signal was touching the tip of my thumb to the tip of my index finger, much like all those gods in Hindu art.
Little did we know at the time that she is very susceptible to suggestion, and has a strong propensity to make sweeping generalizations on the conscious and unconscious level.
So, we noticed that after using the hand signal for several weeks she began to generalize the signal. Soon she was going into trance if I used my thumb and ring finger, or if I brought my thumb and middle finger close together without touching. This became very inconvenient, as she would often trance out whenever I was filing my fingernails, picking my nose, etc...
As time went on, she would drop into deep trances whenever she would hear words like: Deep, Deeper, Down, Relax.
She would trance out if she saw a wave of relaxation pass over someone's face.
She has seen world famous hypnotherapists (Erickson's proteges) who have tried to reduce her susceptibility to accidental trance, but they have not had an effect.
To make this worse, we recently did some deep trance work. While she was in a deep trance I suggested that she create some sort of symbol in her mind to use as an anchor to re-access that state whenever she needed. The symbol she chose was an owl. I even gave her the strong suggestion that only she can use this symbol on herself to go into trance, and if anyone or anything presented the symbol to her it would have no effect. This suggestion didn't work. She has seen this symbol several times on TV since then and each time she has dropped into trance. This is something she could possibly see while driving, so I am worried about this.
I'm positive that this reaction of hers has nothing to do with the behavior of the hypnotist. I'm quite convinced it is entirely due to her own mind.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on, why it's happening, or what I can do about it?

Hello 8CB,
Contact me directly via email through this site or through my site (URL below). I will reply with a basic script to "Seal" her susceptibility.
In the private email, please let me know if she is using any psychotropic Rx meds (for depression, anxiety, etc)or "recreational" meds... This can also affect your current concern.
Many people that have had traumatic experiences, like you described, have automatically dissociated during those events. It can feel "safe" and "comfortable" to them. It is an emotional escape... like a mental/emotional safety valve.
The repeated abuse has taught her mind to dissociate readily.
Hypnosis is dissociation so these people go into trance quickly and easily which is not always in their best interest. I do have an issue with hypnotists working with these issues when they do not have the training or experience. But... it is what it is at this point. Ericksonian is not the stuff to use with these types of issues. |
