I am interested in hypnosis, mostly as a hobby/for self improvement, but I have seen ads for ICBCH certification courses, and they look interesting. I think maybe they could increase my knowledge and improve my practice, but are they worth doing if hypnosis is not a part of my career?
Maybe another way to state the question is: the courses are a lot more expensive than books on the subject, are they significantly more effective than reading a book (I have a few but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name names here) and practicing on myself and friends?
Are the courses/certification worth the extra money? |

You are allowed to name names. :)
A certification class will give you more hands-on experience. The thing is, hypnosis has a lot to do with the individual, so all courses are NOT created equal.
If I were in the situation you describe, I'd search around for some good books and test results with them before spending the money on a course. |

Thanks for the feedback! I have Richard Nongard's Keys to the Mind. I also have the Everything Self Hypnosis Book and Forbes Robbins Blair's Instant Self Hypnosis. Blair's is really easy to jump right into and get started, but I definitely learned the most from Nongard's book. I am going to take your advice and stick with the books and some practice for now. Suggestions for good books are welcome, especially if they deal with material not covered in the books I already have.
On a sort of related note, my main reason for using hypnosis is to form new, more productive habits for myself, but I am interested in hypnosis just for fun as well. To that end, is there a "best" way to reach a deep state of trance quickly? I think the deepest I have been was just by chaining several deepeners together. I'd like to achieve that again, just because it feels good, but I don't know if it's worth taking 30 minutes to get there. |

A reliable way to get depth quickly is using a Dave Elman induction. You can learn it from his book "Hypnotherapy" - Dave Elman.
There are MANY variations of the Elman induction on the internet. Using my own variation of the Elman I can get good depth within a few seconds and deepen it in a few minutes. I teach the same thing to most of my clients. |

I was in the same position when I wanted to get certification. I am from Canada and wanted to get the best possible course I could that had the most distinction and was recognized by the government as a certified school .
In September I'm going to the pacific institute of advanced hypnotherapy but as many people have said it is going to be about you and what you want out of it . Yes it does cost some money (trust me) but its about your mentor as well , mine is the 2011 IMDHA educator of the year , she is part of university studies and well respected. On top of my diploma in clinical hypnotherapy I will also get my certification with the IMDHA as well.
So as you can see I am taking the approach where I will treat this as a profession but really at this very moment in time I am the same as you , reading as much as I can and learning all sides .
I hope this helps :) |

Hi When you are reading something from a book, your natural instinct to block certain things will be in place. If you are taking a course, at least a good one, to use hypnosis as a therapy you will find that a consequence of that is that you will be forced to examine yourself and discover more about yourself. It depends whether you want to develop your interest or develop yourself. You would get more personal awareness from the course.

Hi Some very good answers there, although one thing no one has covered is that in the UK there is no legally recognised qualifications. Anyone (even with no or very little experience) can set up as a hypnotist, hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, stage hypnotist or worse trainer in any of the above and it is totally un regulated. The nearest to any form of regulation is that stage hypnotists should apply to local councils for permission to perform under the 1952 hypnotism act. Any course is only as good as the person teaching it, not their qualifications. However, there is a lot to be said for face to face learning. Regards Adam Night www.bookahypnotist.co.uk |
