Mike, your question is far too general. Are you talking about members who are experienced practitioners, or those who are new to hypnosis, and trying to learn as much as possible before taking a course? For the later, I would recommend any books they can find by Milton Erickson, Richard Bandler, Dave Elman, and for those interested in NLP Carmine Baffa. For the experienced practitioner, I would not recommend any books, I feel they should be capable of developing their own methods and aproaches to clients, not copying someone else. Incidentally, these old book may seem out of date, but are a terrific learning tool in that they offer the basics which other more up to date books do not. Terry |

Hi Terry I am just trying to stimulate the imagination of our members,so that they may share their thoughts and learning experiences with us. Myself I would always recommend DAVE ELMANS book Hypnotherapy, for those people who would like to emulate a 1950s master. Try this one---Practical Psychology by ANNA MAUD HALLAM.I have a copy of the original, printed in 1922--mind blowing concepts--a great read |

In addition to Elman's book, here are some of my favorites...
Solution-Oriented Hypnosis by William Hudson O'Hanlon and Michael Martin: Energetic and humorous are words that have been used to describe this book. This book is taken from a workshop on solution-oriented hypnosis. O'Hanlon does the best job that I've ever found of "nutshelling" Erickson's techniques into an easy to understand and apply format. You'll be able to induce trance, know what to do once you get 'em into trance (using O'Hanlon's Class of Problems/Class of Solutions model). O'Hanlon demystifies trance in general and particularly Erickson's seemingly mysterious interventions. If you've ever wanted to be able to generate the right story to help someone change or if you're just curious "Why did Erickson suddenly start talking about baseball?" this book is for you.
Taproots: Underlying Principles of Milton Erickson's Therapy and Hypnosis By William Hudson O'Hanlon: This book helps you to understand how Erickson created his magic. You'll learn the communication principles that formed the basis of Erickson's work. Then O'Hanlon goes on to demonstrate how Erickson used these principles in his therapy. Throughout the book O'Hanlon uses stories, anecdotes and case histories to illustrate points. Wouldn't you like to be able to make some of the wonderful interventions that Erickson did? You won't be Milton H. Erickson after reading this but you'll have a much firmer grasp on his techniques.
My Voice Will Go With You (The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson) Edited by Sidney Rosen: Read the actual tales that Erickson used with his clients and students. You'll find yourself changing, letting go of detrimental mind-sets and limitations and opening up to new possibilities just from reading these "teaching tales". Sidney Rosen's commentary adds insight into the how and why Erickson chose particular tales and how he used them. Some recommend this book for learning more about Erickson, I recommend it for positive personal change.
TRANCE-Formations (Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis) by Richard Bandler: Learn simple and advanced inductions, verbal pacing and leading, how to help someone who doesn't visualize well visualize, deep trance identification, pain control, amnesia and many other useful things. The book includes exercises (usually three person) so that you can become proficient with the techniques. Many NLP concepts are covered as are techniques such as the New Behavior Generator and Reframing. Well organized and easily understood.
Persuasion Engineering by Richard Bandler and John LaValle: Richard Bandler and John LaValle work their magic in a book derived from their famous Persuasion Engineering seminars but re-worked slightly to fit the book format. The book "walks its talk" by teaching unconsciously. Many of the main pieces are laid out at the end of the book for those of us that want to understand consciously why we're suddenly much more effective (that's me). Although this book masquerades as a "sales book" I believe the applications go far beyond sales. Ever wanted to get that client to make a change? Ever wondered why people won't make changes that are perfectly logical? Ever wondered how to fix those things? This book has the answers. This book taught me what I believe is the single most important thing that I've ever learned. I'll let you discover what that is for yourself. WARNING: If you're one of those pedantic anal-retentive sorts who can't let go and enjoy the seemingly irrelevant and irreverent stories that Bandler relates you won't enjoy this book. Relax, enjoy the book and accept that you're learning from it but that you may not recognize how. After you've read it, notice how your behaviors, attitudes and beliefs have changed for the better.
Core Transformation : Reaching the Wellspring Within by Connirae Andreas and Tamara Andreas: I saw Connirae speak in Denver (in '93 I believe) what a pleasure! In a workshop that Tamara taught, I learned just how good she was a creating rapport. These two really exemplify NLP skills and the process (Core Transformation) that they've come up with is wonderful. Core Transformation is a process designed to help us reach our "core states" and be able to experience those feelings into other situations. The book is well organized and thorough, when you get done you'll know the process. The core transformation process is a bit longer than most NLP interventions but well worth it. You can do it by yourself - and it's a good process for those who suffer from a chronic illness. The book includes transcripts from actual Core Transformation sessions.
The Couple Who Became Each Other; Stories of Healing and Transformation from a Leading Hypnotherapist David Calof (co-written with Robin Simons) provides some excellent examples of how hypnotic approaches can combine with family systems therapy and other more mainstream psychiatric approaches. Calof studied with Erickson and offers a highly readable set of case histories in which he simply explains how what his thinking was and briefly how the techniques work. This book gives you a good idea of Ericksonian and other techniques in action.
Enjoy, Keith Livingston |
