Q: ... I have a general tendency to rush which lead me to wrong positioning and therefore the execution of the shots is either inefficient or completely wrong. When I mentally tell myself to slow down, it only works for the first 1 or 2 shots then again I go back to my old habit, so I'm wondering if hypnosis might help me?
A: ... It sounds like you're working "against" some behavior that is driving/motivating you to "rush". The short-term results you experience with intentionally working against it shows that this behavior is relatively persistent/strong. How "strong" is that behavior? What is driving it? What can be done to reduce this drive/strength/persistence?
Impatience? A desire to win? Fear of losing? Simply muscle memory?
Hi Patrick Thanks for the original answer, your questions made me ponder many possibilities. You're totally correct advising to see a specialist, I found that is not easy to pinpoint which possibility is 'strongest' amongst all others. I did quite a lot of reading regarding "negative motivator" and also specific exercises geared towards table tennis. Of these I found the "Perceptual Experiment" -www.personalgrowthcourses.net/video/perceptual_experiment - very interesting. Basically having to count the number of passes between white dressed players I did not notice what else was happening on the screen.
Here is my list (in random order): - fear of missing the shot (not fear of losing, that doesn't bother me, especially if I play "My Game"). I notice during practice that if I make too many mistakes (more then 3 in a row) I lose focus, get frustrated and drop efficacy - extreme desire to win, win quickly and powerfully (I play attack at all costs, even when a 50/50 defensive shot is more appropriate) - lack of full perception (as per video exercise), not a negative motivator but the effect of "something"
How can I proceed to further discover the primary cause of the behaviour? Cheers Jon |

Lack of full perception during sports is desired to some extent in order to focus on your performance.. do you feel you're missing something important?
The strong desire to win may be fueled by the fear of missing? Or is it something on it's own?
Those are some things I would recommend to explore further... |
