Hi,
I'd like to know if hypnotherapy can help with personality disorders.
Specifically things like: Narcissism, Avoidant, Histrionic and Passive-Aggressive.
If it can, what can one expect (or hope) to happen? Is it a mirraculous tranformation? Or is it more of a 'emotional freedom' thing?

Andrew,
Speaking for myself, I don't work with a diagnosed disorder without a doctor referral.
With that being said, I've successfully worked with the issues you mention in addition to conditions such as bipolar, depression, anxiety, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, and more.
To me, the point is to look at the presented issue NOT as a diagnosed disease, but rather as a collection of symptoms. What is the prevailing emotional core to the behavior? What are the different motivating factors around this behavior? What is it's history? What current environmental situations may still be reinforcing the behavior, or not?
etc, etc..
Figure out the emotional negative motivator and target it.

Yeah I was being specific only so that I didn't list 25 billion personality traits in this thread. I've been working on this for a few days and I recognised that a lot of the traits I discovered about myself could be slotted into this 'disorders'.
I personally do not take ownership of this 'disorders', I just look at them as emotional patterns that play out in my subconscious. To that end I wanted to know if hypnotherapy is something that could be benefitial to tackeling these emotions.
Thank you again, Patrick, for taking the time to comment on my post. I feel like I am narrowing in on the core issues and will soon be free emotionally to explore myself, other people and life in general.

In the UK hypnotherapists working outwith the NHS directly are steered away from dealing with patients reporting any psychotic illness for a number of very pertinent reasons which I won't go into here, but which include the effects of pertinant medication. These illnesses includes schizophrenia, bipolar or borderline personality disorders. We are trained to identify these conditions and always refer back to GPs in the first instance.
You don't tend to find narcissists in therapists offices, more the people who have been living with them or involved with them.

| Labels labels everywhere! Apart from the serious conditions mentioned in the previous comment it seems to me that any labels just give people an excuse to behave in a less than satisfactory way. Is this not a bit like self hypnosis - tell yourself often enough that you have social phobia (for instance) and you will never speak to anyone again but it won't be your fault, it's your illness. As said in the previous post it is important to get to what is behind the problem and not give the client a label to hide behind. |
