I started practising self hypnosis from a book a few weeks ago but had to stop because it has left me feeling very negative and has brought up a lot of emotions. Is this normal and are there techniques for working with emotions and feelings once they are brought up?

It's not "normal", but it happens with some people that have underlying emotional issues that are just beneath the surface.

Best way to work on those is with a good hypnotist. It's tough to work on our own issues.

There are self-hypnosis audios that may resolve things for you. That may be worth testing first.

There are some for sale on this site as well as my own site.

when you put yourself into trance, make sure you leave the trance with a good feeling.
think and visualise of a time when you where really happy and use all five senses if possible and embellish the happy feeling.
it could be possible that you are worrying about this beforehand and therefore bringing up this negative feeling but through time and positive thinking this should diminish.
Another point I would like to share, when I first used self hypnosis and was using it all the time. When I went to bed at night I was sinking into a trance as my body was so conditioned to going deep into trance. As a result if I had a bad dream or so, the negative feeling I woke up with would stay with me all day. My humble advice would be to give yourself a break now and then. Or when you wake up take five minutes using breathing exercises, visualisation and positive suggestions. Basically using the tequnique I stated earlier. As well as self hypnosis during my day while I'm working I will say I am happy on the in breath, while visualing myself happy or visualise the word happy while foucsing on the happy feeling. The same goes for my suggestion on the out breath.
I hope this helps but there are far more experienced and trained people on this board to give you advice.

sorry I would like to add, I went to a trained hypnotherapist to get me started in self hypnosis and he gave me an anchor to get into trance.
I highly recommend this but you have to work at it yourself

This is not at all unusual when things start surfacing form the unconscious memory bank. Unresolved emotional issues, etc... Stick to your program it will work.

hi im new to the forum, i was just browsing and saw your problem, i suffered badly with depression a few years ago and i tried to read a book on self hypnosis but because of the mixed emotions and feelings i had, i could'nt concentrate so i bought an audio cd and laid on the sofa and listened, its more relaxing and you can take it all in rather than trying to remember what was on the last page. try audio or dvd there is a good range out there, good luck!!
