Hi, im confused about self-hypnosis. All my personal experiences of hypnosis (1.5 years of trancing by hypnotist) involve what i can only describe as unconsciousness. Im fairly smart, and have both a dreamer and dissociated type history. When Im hypnotized using fixed gaze, distraction, shock, relaxation methods, amongst others i go straight into trance(yes im a flopper!), and no matter how hard i try to i cant remember even when its suggested i remember my trances! Its like 2hours of my life just disappears. Also when Im conscious i say one thing, when im unconscious i say something different. How does that work? Even when asked simple things like name, address, age etc?
Heres the thing when i try self-hypnosis (relaxation method), my eyes get tired, close, then body goes numb all over ,all over the body has a hot feeling with pins/needles. I lose sensation then get hypnic jerks, im super relaxed but conscious! Heres the problem my critical factor is still in place, and i completely ignore suggestions. I can stay in this state for a couple of hours before boredom sets in. Usually i use the time to solve maths problems :)
So which of these extremes is trance? Needless to say Hypnosis does not seem to be a good tool for me? And how best can I overcome the guardian? because i even tried 2hr sleep sessions with 30minutes awake then repeat and a modified diet to supercondition myself. It still didnt work.
I need help/advice please. And yes I've been to a professional clinical hypnotherapist whos baffled.

Many people I have worked with that have a history of dissociation (often associated with past emotional trauma(s)) will attain much quicker depth than those who do not have this history. And sometimes too much of the wrong kind of depth (the wrong kind for these purposes).
Hypnosis IS a dissociated state. The increased dissociation for people like this is more than is needed for a session. And, the historical/behavioral dissociation will sometimes have it's own idiosyncrasy that influences the experience.
From what I understand of your description, what I would do is work on basic hypnosis induction (whichever you prefer) some basic depth, and then work on REDUCING the level of dissociation while keeping the level of hypnosis.
That can be different for different people.. but I suspect reducing the PHYSICAL level of dissociation while improving the mental relaxation.
This can be tricky to do on one's own... doing it on one's own REQUIRES some critical factor, which may also be part of the trouble you encounter. |

I hear what you say and thank you for it. Light trance doesnt really help me since my first experiences for 3 months was erotic hypnosis, and non-voluntary (covert). Thus I dont take suggestion at all well anymore. In fact I dont take any kind of hypnotic induction very well, since given a chance my brain just says "OK hypnosis is coming ignore the suggestions". My point was that the only kind of hypnosis that seems to work for me is when im unconscious? Its difficult to describe but if im conscious and listening nothing much happens, whereas shocked into unconscious states im happy to somnambulise at the drop of a hat. Is the issue maybe one of control, since consciously im monitoring for reframing/NLP stuff which has screwed up my life?

Hello Bunny,
Yes, you have a fear behavior - based upon past experience - that drives a need for a sense-of-control. That would generate the conscious interference. And you would be struggling against that protective behavior while looking for medium depth and using suggestions.
If you were my client, the first thing I would address is "OK hypnosis is coming ignore the suggestions".... that is a behavior/belief you're now working against....
Instead we'd want something in place like "OK hypnosis is coming. In the past I was innocently ignorant of these techniques. Now I know more and that means I am stronger than I was before. Or, more accurately, now I am more aware of how strong I have always been and am able to make use of this strength. My mind is able to filter suggestions and whom I accept suggestions from. My mind is capable of doing this on it's own - w/o my participation. If the suggestions are for in my best interest, I will accept them and integrate them into my mind."
.... something like that
There would be different methods of accomplishing that.
