Has anyone here ever used subliminal affirmations? I have been trying to use affirmations in the form of subliminal messages to overcome social anxiety? I've always been really shy and introverted, and I'm just wondering if it's actually possible to become a whole new person -social and outgoing. I'm 28 years old, and I've been dealing with this problem my entire life. I've got no friends and no social-life because of it. I've tried self-hypnosis in the past, but I didn't seem to be getting anywhere with it either. Recently I found a computer program that flashes subliminal messages on the screen. It also has audio capiblities. So, I came up with my own affirmations to be subliminally flashed on the screen. I made sure my affirmations/suggestions covered every area of my problem. I also made an audio recording of them so the program would repeat them over and over. I have the subliminals flashing all the time, and I listen to the audio twice a day. I've been doing this for about a month now and I don't really feel any different to be honest. I'm just wondering why this doesn't seem to be working. I have good affirmations. Here is an example of some of my subliminal affimations: I am comfortable around people. I express myself freely. I am social and outgoing. I have self-confidence. I am bold and socially fearless. I make eye contact with people. I can speak to anybody. I enjoy social opportunities. I can easily find things to talk about. I release all self-conscious feelings. I don't worry about what other people think of me. I am comfortable in my own skin. etc...
Does anyone know why this isn't working and what I can do different to get results? I really don't want to be a loner the rest of my life. |

Subliminal affirmations, as well as self-hypno, will be working "against" your currently held sub-conscious beliefs/behaviors.
If/when the current beliefs/behaviors are strong/dominant enough, they will reject theses indirect attempts at changing them.

So, what then is the solution? I know people have used these methods to overcome strongly held beliefs. That is what they're for, to reprogram the subconscious mind. What are they doing different to get it to work. If subliminal messages didn't ever work, they wouldn't have made them illegal in adverstising. And a lot of people have had success with self-hypnosis even if I haven't, so why are they doing different? |

It depends on how strong the currently held beliefs are. Sometimes it works, sometimes it works short-term, and some times it doesn't work.
There are a whole lot of variables involved.
Lots of people have NOT had results from self-hypno as well. When it doesn't work, other options should be considered.
Given the situation you're currently describing, I think your best option is to see a hypnotist that uses "analytical hypnosis" to directly address the issue, rather than further attempts at addressing it indirectly. |

I have never heard of the term "analytical hypnosis". What exactly is that? |

It addresses the foundation, or origins of the behavior. Which removes it's influence. |

Hello Kurt,
The reason subliminal messages don't really work is that you need to be participating with your conscious mind to a degree.
In a hypnosis session, be it something you would find online or in a hypnotists office, you would be formulating images in your mind and feelings in your body.
The mind is actually receiving an example of what it means to be more outgoing and it literally has the experience that you are doing it and as such, it creates a new memory of that experience. With practice and repetition, your mind being guided this way, and the subconscious mind not knowing the difference between what's real and imagined, you can change this behavior to the one you want.
Subliminal words, yes, are heard by the subconscious ... but unfortunately the words do not really have any meaning to the subconscious mind. Words in hypnosis, are simply used to evoke a visual and kinesthetic response to the criteria being suggested.
Best of luck to you!

I've been reading up more on hypnosis to try to figure out what exactly i've been doing wrong. And, what you just said is exactly what I was begining to think I was doing wrong. It's nice to have that confirmed for me. Thank you.
I do have some experience in dream interpretation, so I don't know how I missed that. Pictures seem to be the language of the subconscious -we do after all dream in pictures. And when interpreting dreams, the feeling in the dream seem to be what's most important.
So, that could be why self-hypnosis didn't work for me, because I was just throwing words at my subconscious. They weren't painting pictures for my subconscious of what I wanted, and they wern't provoking the feelings within me that I wanted to feel.
Perhaps on the subject of social anxiety, I need to take myself on a mind jouney. I need to imagine myself in a social situation, and I need to see it going well for me. I need imagine myself being comfortable with people all around me. And to feel what that feels like. To feel confident and comfortable in my own skin. To imagine people responding well to me. etc.
I seen a hypnosis script for confidence somewhere and in the script it had you anchor the feeling of confidence to something you could do physically, such as putting your finger and thumb together. So any time you want to feel the feeling you can just put the finger and thumb togther and you will feel it. That might be a good idea -to add an achor.
As for the other method -subliminal affirmations. I had wondered if I should be paricipating any with my conscious mind. I guess you have to give some attention to what you want. I was hoping the subconscious would do all the work for me. |

Hi I would have to agree with Patrick in that some things are too deeply entrenched to successfully use self hypnosis and suggestion. We are constantly having negative thoughts that bypass our conscious mind - we don't even notice them. It has been shown that we have more negative thoughts than positive ones. I suppose you could call those out-of-conscious-knowledge thoughts subliminal. Many have been formed in the past to, in some way make you feel safe, whilst at the same time now becoming a burden to you. What I mean is, if as a child you found that pleasing everyone got you rewards and kept you in favour then that would become a behaviour and you would find it harder than most to please yourself at the expense of displeasing someone else. This equally applies to a situation where you may have found it beneficial to keep a low profile and keep out of trouble. you may find it more difficult to be the centre of attention or speak out for yourself.
These are fairly obvious but generally things are more subtle than that. It is often really difficult to find out what you are looking for yourself as you have learned to filter out certain options and so the communication you are introducing does not correlate for you.
I would also add that you have to be very careful with any suggestions and think carefully about the interpretation of them. An extreme example would be for someone who found it hard to trust people to use 'I now trust people'. I will leave you to figure out why that would be a problem
