Hey guys, I have known about self hypnosis for years but there are some questions and road blocks along the way that hinder progress. I realize that most of the sites out there are just hype and will not give me good information. My main question is, what are some ways I can tell if I am in a trance or not?
Usually I start out tensing each muscle group and then when i am finished with that I visualize myself in a relaxing place, I try to imagine every aspect of it that I can and try to absorb myself in it completely. On a good day this will eventually lead to a very intense feeling of relaxation throughout the whole body, almost as if I am melting away. This is what confuses me, are these intense feelings a trance?
I haven't really had success with suggestion because I don't understand how it works well enough. I hear that the mind does not recognize negatives like "don't" or "no", if this even true? It certainly makes wording suggestions difficult if I can't use negatives at all. |

I have heard mixed opinions on the negatives, some say it doesn't matter and they are accepted by the subconscious mind while others say to avoid them. The thing is that the subconscious mind does not analyze things, it takes what comes in there as fact, without judgement. So with that in mind, it would seem that it is OK to use negative words in suggestions.
The absolute BEST way to learn self hypnosis is to have someone hypnotize you, and provide a trigger that will allow you to return to the hypnotic state when you desire. I would say if you are experiencing an intense feeling of relaxation, you are likely in a trance state. You might provide yourself with this suggestion to return to this state in the future:
Any time I touch the tip of my nose with my left pinky, I will return back to the state I am in now. And each time I do this I will go deeper than the time before. It's a good idea to repeat the suggestion several times, this will make it more effective. Of course if you regularly touch the tip of your nbose with your left pinky, you might want to come up with a different trigger!
Once you are able to reproduce this intense feeling of relaxation quickly and easily using this method, I would suggest that you are indeed able to hypnotize yourself! |
