Hypnosis? Magic Show?
[Story I]
Chinese Hypnosis Market is Not Mature By Lemon Hu
There's a huge potential market for hypnotherapy in China, and a large number of foreign experts in this field are needed.
"In China, many psychological counseling centers say they can provide hypnosis service. Hypnosis has a large market in China, and it is very effective in motivating peoples potential abilities. However, Chinese hypnosis market is not mature yet, and most psychological counseling centers are not qualified to do so."
People should choose the counseling centers carefully, experts of Chinese Psychological Education Website say, First, to check if the psychological therapists have the qualification and if treatment room are delicately designed or arranged since the hypnosis calls for a special environment. Second, to see if you can follow the psychological therapists, who usually induce people into hypnotic state by some words, behavior, or medicine. Third, choose the qualified organizations. As a type of psychotherapy, hypnosis has just been applied in a small number of psychological departments of hospitals and psychological counseling centers. ...
[Story II] Lonely Hearts under Pressure By Lei Mingyu For China's lonely hearts, Spring Festival can be a psychological nightmare.Xi Anjie, an office worker in Shanghai, is among the millions and millions of singles who are under great pressure from relatives concerned by their marital status.
Unable to find a girlfriend to parade in front of his matchmaking-obsessed relatives, Xi, 35, chose to stay at home after a brief celebration with his parents for this week-long holiday.Depression tortures him now and then.
Others have devised more effective methods to cope with the problem. Last month, a Beijing University student was offering 1,000 yuan ($125) to potential "girlfriends" if they would rent themselves to him for 10 days during Spring Festival to impress his parents. Zhong Guangyan, a successful business man spent 2,500 yuan to consult a psychological doctor who was generous in giving him advices and encouragement. More confident, the man soon got over the depression and succeeded in finding a girlfriend.
Wang Jisheng, a professor with the Psychology Institution of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that as more people are finding it difficult to meet a partner, China's singles should be careful about possible psychological problems. Despite the underdeveloped market in China, the demand for psychological consultancy is stupendous...
[Story III] David Copperfield's China Tour (excerpt)
China.org.cn, edited by Chen Lin, August 14, 2002 I will be back with new acts and more surprises," said David Copperfield as he finished his last round of performances in Chinese mainland and prepared to leave for Taiwan on August 5.
Copperfield gave 40 performances to enthusiastic audiences in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. He left for Taipei after his mainland tour concluded with a standing ovation in Beijing.
The shows in Beijing alone took some 35 million yuan (about US$4,200,000) according to sources at the sponsoring organization. The Copperfield magic extends to his magic box office takings. His Beijing events were all sold out even before the first performance.
Why is Copperfield so popular that our homegrown illusionists may appear too far behind to catch up? Copperfield spoke of seeking fresh inspiration for his magic here in China. He left with his 35 million yuan, but what had he brought with him to contribute to Chinese magic?
There are several reasons why magic in China enjoys far less popular support than it used to, especially with the young. Chinese magicians need to become more competent. Many of them tend to be conservative in their approach and are not sufficiently bold or creative. In addition the marketing of magic should be better developed, said Fu Qifeng a Chinese magician. Wayne Wang agrees with Fu that Davids magic has had a positive impact on Chinese magicians. A Chinese citizen who has been staying in the United States for about 10 years, he is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians as well as the Society of American Magicians. "Copperfield has revolutionized magic and raised it from being merely a performance to an actual art form. He has made people accept the fact that magic too can reach such heights both artistically and commercially," said Wang,"I think Chinese magic has been making steady progress over the years. However it has been confined to small-scale performances, mainly focusing on sleight of hand. Its not easy to impress a modern audience with this. Western magic on the other hand, concentrates more on bringing together a whole variety of effects to create an overall impact on the audience.
Many Chinese magicians have welcomed Copperfield's tour, recognizing his place at the very pinnacle of the profession.
