Hi I am new to this site. My Dad is a Chiropractor and my Mom a Nutritionist and my brother is a certified physical theripist so general health care is commom in my growing up. My mom and sister have both been to Hypnotists for help. I have always been interested in this subject and I want to learn about it and see if I can learn to be a Hypnotist. My Dad thinks it may be helpful for all of us and possibly a way for me to make a living. Oh by the way I am in my 40's and a sucessful financial planner who is looking for a change in my life. I have several degrees including a graduate degree from a Big Ten University so I am comfortable with study.
I don't know how to get started with a respectable training seminar or course without just picking one. Does anyone have any recommendations how I can get started in this field? |

Great point and an obvious oversight on my part. I live in the United States more specifically in the Midwest, Indiana. I am willing to travel for good instuction but obviously would be inclined to perfer to find something close to home if possible.

| Hello Bob, Before you make any committment, check out the Indiana laws on hypnotherapy. They are very restrictive and require you to go to a school in Indiana, licensed by the Board of Education. |

Mark, Thank you for informing me of the licensing issue. I had no idea. I will try to find out more on that while I look for any respectable training options.

Hello,
There have been quite a few weird things going on in Indiana in regard to Hypnosis Training. Having followed the legislative side of the Hypnosis business for quite some time I can pretty safely say you are in the worst state for practicing.
Do a search in this forum (top of any page click the search link) and enter "Indiana" (without the quotes). You will find some interesting reading.
If you find a good state with some top quality training (Arizona with Gil) you just may want to move there and start your practice there as well.

Hi Robert,
I just had to respond to this topic. I practice in Indiana and I must tell you that Indiana is the biggest joke in the U.S. in regards to certification. They don't require licensing, only certification. Indiana is very political in their state laws such as favoritism, conflicts of interests, and basically knowing whose butt to kiss. I have enough information to really embarrass this state's Hypnosis committee and I have gone round and round with them. I had over 1100 hours of education with the university I received my degree from including 500 hours of classroom instruction. This university is nationally and internationall accredited by a private accreditation institution, but since I didn't attend classes from Indiana, I was disapproved. Go figure. Anyway, I investigated this board very carefully and found many interesting behind the scenes activities, most inmportantly, at the time I applied many years ago, the only approved school was owned by one of the board members. I threatened a lawsuit for discriminatory practices and to the governor's office for a personal meeting, but then, I never heard from this board again. As I stated before, Indiana is very political and it's a matter of who you know and who's butt to kiss. I do neither but a good threat goes a long way. |
