Yesterday, I had the typical hypnotherapy session. I have been going to a hypnotist to help me with my eating disorder, which surprisingly helped me to over come the fear of getting fat. Now she is helping me to overcome my elevator phobia, which is taking more time. Now, my therapist has been using age regression on me. Normally it is a relaxing experience and similar to my yoga classes.
The session started out normal, until she had me to recall teh night before when I got lightheaded in the movie theater's bathroom. It was a panic attack. Then as she counted down to when I had my first panic attack (it was to help me to realize the same feelings when I get into an elevator), I started feeling sick and dizzy and my heart raced. I started to shift on the fouton, but I just laid there. I felt like I relived my first panic attack. That feeling went away and teh rest of teh session went fine until my next experience. I remember most of the session, but at one point it felt like I dozed off and I thought I was starting to dream. I seemed to have ignored her questions, but suddenly, I blurted out a nonsense answer. When she asked me again, I sort of came back to the room and was able to answer them nornally. I don't think I was asleep. It felt like that feeling you get when you are sleepwalking and you remember some of it and it feels like a dream. You think it is a dream when you wake up, until someone tells you other wise. I have no clue what I was dreaming about or what she was asking me. I felt my lips move and words coming out, but I felt like I was not there. I also remember, right before I "dozed" off, my eyes sort of rolled up intomy head. In fact my eyes moved a lot during that session.
What did I expereince? Did I experience a very deep state of hypnosis during my second experience? I asked my therapist about it and she said I was disassociating. |

My opinion:
I don't think anyone can say for sure what happened during that session. Eye's and eyelids moving around is a clear sign of deep trance, but not remembering what happened is not so clear. Maybe dissociating, or maybe you just fell asleep for a bit. If a client gives me a nonsense answer, I assume they've gotten too close to sleep. Then I bring them "up" a little and continue. It is possible for a client to get too deep and it can make a session less productive, depending on the techniques used.
