I have had an interest in counselling and hypnotherapy for many years. I began my studies in counselling many years ago. I was accepted for the MA in Counselling at Durham University but rejected the offer after suffering the display of elitism among the rest of the successful candidates and the obvious issues the lecturers had with the male of the species as well as their need to project their sexism and disdain for the opposite sex onto others. I have thought many times that I should have simply persevered and turned a blind eye to it, but I doubt this would have been possible considering I have very strong views regarding equality among people. My views are simple, we are all of flesh and blood and each worthy of equal respect regardless of status, culture, sex, age, religous belief etc. These values are intrinsic in my personal code of ethics.
After mulling it over for several years, trying to find a financially viable option and recovering from the negativities found in other forums, I have at last taken the plunge and enrolled on a curative hypnotherapy course. The course is by correspondence and was the only financially viable option to me. I would have prefered others which included one on one, but I'm far from rich. Nevertheless it is my intention to gain certification and subsequent employment then further training and qualifications; personally I feel one can never know it all.
At present I do have voluntary clients who have approached me and expressed an interest in allowing me to practice hypnosis with them. I have draughted a contract which includes a section stating they are fully aware I am not qualified, I am only a trainee and I am not associate with nor affiliated to any professional or governing bodies whatsoever. The contract also outlines the usual areas of confidentiality and duty of care. I also provide them with an extensive faq regarding the various myths of hypnosis. There are two copies of the contract, both are signed by both parties and a witness and each hold one copy.
My dilema is this. While my clients are very happy to not only allow me to hypnotise them (for free I hasten to add, I cannot charge while learning) but also eagerly book further sessions, I have a concern regarding the ethics of performing hypnosis while training without any certification, yet I can see no other way of obtaining experience hands on. Everyone wants money that I simply don't have. With this in mind I have made every effort to make each and every client fully aware of the qualifications I do and do not have and make no assertions as to my abilities, experience or knowledge other than I do have certification in counselling.
How does everyone else obtain experience without it costing them a fortune?
Further, and in my own defence, Erikson and Messmer and many others didn't have one on one training.
Addendum: It is my intention to find a supervisor I can afford, but at present I have none. |

Something that you can look into is a practice group, there are all over the place, it usually only coat a few pounds, just to cover room charges. Consider getting friends and family to help you, you dont have to engage in any therapeutic changes just get use to learning and playing with hypnosis. What you have to understand is Hypnosis is language, you talk and the words go in, you can set up little experiments, and play with suggestion recognition, you can think of a response you want to elicit, and as you go about talking in your day to day life see how many response you can get. Your use and flexibility with language in down to how much you can allow youre self to let go, of the limitations you set of yourself. One note insurance you will not be able to get insured for hypnotherapy with a home study programme, in the UK you have to complete a minimum of 150 hours of live training. Regards Jay

Hell! Thanks Jay, I wasn't aware of that insurance problem. So, it's going to cost me a grand plus either way I look at it, bugger!
Also thanks for the recommendation re:groups, I'll certainly look into that and see if I can find any relatively locally. I'm currently being assisted by friends and family and friends of friends, and by and large it is purely a case of inducing trance for relaxation and beneficial suggestions such as "You'll feel rejuvenated and refreshed" etc. |

If you find a Hypnosis training that you like the look of, if you ring them up, most good schools will allow you to pay in installments.check out Learning Direct as a number of programmes get funding. and you could end up only paying a percentage of the total coat.

Thanks Jay, I've contacted quite a few to no avail. BSY were the only college offering a payment scheme and were by far the cheapest. I'll certainly contact Learn Direct though. |
