Hi Lynn
That is a bite of a tricky question to answer, yet here is my take, when we are awake our Brain is classed as being online, that means both hemispheres are working together, in conduction, with the frontal lobes, etc, etc, now when some one as hard a stroke, blood flow to parts of the brain, are affected, then things like speech, eye sight, balance, and whole or parts of limes can be affected also, so what happens when you sleep is some parts of your brain go off line, in particular the frontal lodes, go into a resting state, so this more of a guess, of what is happening, as your brain going in to its resting start, the pathways that have been damaged are firing because there is lest blood flow in parts of the brain. So some activity is being processed, as you sleep.
As I am not a neuro surgeon, and don’t have special access to one, this is at best a rough guess.
