Does hypnosis really work for weight loss and to stop smoking?

Yes to both questions!!

I have used self-hypnosis on myself for weight loss and weight control and it does work.

I have used hypnotherapy on my clients for weight management and it has worked for them, and for removing food cravings for chocolate, nuts and biscuits, etc.

The smoking cessation therapy is extremely effective providing you use the right script!!

Hope this helps

I've always found that smoking cessation is extemely effective providing you don't use a script at all and let your client's resources do the changing.

Got to agree with Bill on this. Finding a trigger is important to success with smokers, and a script won't do it. Terry

Will Hypnosis work for weight loss?

Hmmm ... if hypnosis is merely a state of mind where
you're more suggestible and more suseptible to new habits,
I would guess so (as long as we're not talking about
Hollywood hypnosis). Hypnosis is a state of mind.
I'm sure everyone on this board
is aware on here that they may have
LEARNED the habit of overeating as a distracting behavior
for being bored .. or lonely .... instead of going ahead
and satisfying the real need.

And overeating is just one 'distracting' behavior.
Others include: Drinking, smoking ... and shopping.

Now, lets look at it from another standpoint. If you're
highly motivated and don't have any underlying self-sabotaging
mechanisms underneath that continually remind you 'You don't
deserve to achieve your proper weight' or protection issues (resulting from maybe sexual abuse) ... or secondary issues
such as 'If you lose the weight' well .. you have no excuse
anymore not to look for a relationship ....(or the biggie -
Guilt due to an abortion ... or failed relationships). in
that case, direct suggestion hypnosis has a good shot at
working ... but in the thousands of individuals I've worked
with, it's time for a little hypnotherapy to go back
(regression and forgiveness strategies) and have the client
reframe those sabotaging situations , or limiting
beliefs from the past which come up and bite the client
in the butt whenever they do achieve some success.

Some great trainings in Regression and Forgiveness are given
by the legendary Gil Boyne (coming up in Glendale, CA) ....
the Society of Applied Hypnosis - www.society-of-applied-hypnosis.com
- and I offer a hypnotherapy troubleshooting 101 full day class
FOR ADVANCED HYPNOTISTS ONLY detailing the industrial
strength techniques (no ... not gentle ericksonian ...we're
dealing with some mucky stuff back there), exactly what
I do in session (this stuff is NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH .. but
for don't mind facing a client's emotions and whom likes
getting results).

Again, this is just my opinion ... and like you ....
opinions are just that. Everybody has one and as you're
aware, there's only an INFINITE number of ways to achieve
the same result ... you just have to find one way that works
for you.

I think the question here is "can hypnosis alone alter the basal rate?". perhaps yes, judging from the bodily control displayed in some studies in psychoimmunology. however the best way to use hypnosis to raise the basal rate is simply to use behavioural methods directed at natural physical ways of increasing metabolism.
sorry....... i think your time would be so much better used gaining motivation for exercise through hypnotherapy than the visualisation of your metabolism burning brighter etc.

but both together sounds good too. (although in that case the latter may only be another , more metaphorical version of the former - ie. just another way of motivating yourself for exercise)

I've used self hypnosis for weight loss and it works for sure. It's not like how most people think it would though (but then again, there are so many misconceptions as to how hypnosis works already, but that's a topic for another day) as it's not like you waive a watch around, yell "SLEEP" and the pounds fall off. For me, hypnosis worked because it helps you focus more on your actions and how you think about them in addition to a good diet and exercise. When you start to make better and more focussed decisions on how you eat, you will start to see better results.

Look into my eyes...

No, hypnosis does not work! The client responds to the skilled hypnotherapist who understands the underlying dynamics of the clients attitudes toward the intake of food.
The elements that precipitate therapeutic change are
1}Client's readiness for change 2}Client's willingness to give up
real or secondary gains 3} Relationship with therapist(rapport and bonding)4} Use of appropriate methods in therapy (more than reading scripts)5}Follow-up (avoidance of one-hour or one-session programs}
With Respect to All
PS. Reread Count Devio's post above-
to understand subconscious motivation for overeating and weight gain.

I like what countdivio said.
For me I believe weight issues are like so many other issues e.g. smoking, phobias, overeating are just a symptom of something else going on. Hypnosis I believe does work and the client is just responding to suggestions given by the therapist. The important thing to remember and assatain from the client is, do they wish to change for themselves. If the answer is no then hypnosis is not going to work.
I hold weekly meditation classes and I throw in some hypnotic suggestions and the changes in these people is remarkable. If this is the result in meditation imagine what changes can occur in a proper therapy session. Yes self hypnosis does work also. We all have thoughs, trillion of thoughts go through our minds each day. The thing is are these thoughts positive or negitave. All we do is find the cause of these negitive thoughts and the find the best way of getting rid of the cause of those negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. Is it not?

Wishing you the best in love, in light and in happiness.

There are a number of very interesting replies to the original question " does hypnosis work on weight loss & smoking cessation ?" I think everyone agrees that the client has to be motivated to stop . Ilike mark Gill's comments ! Being inexperienced in terms of hypnosis it makes sense to me that one has to get at the root cause of ;weight loss , smoking cessation , etc is a must or we will be ineffective in treatment. WHen I was being trained I had a young lady help me get rid of my obsession with eating cheese . Up until that point I consumed cheese by the kilo not by the slice . Now I can have a block of cheese in the fridge for over a year and not even want to eat it . I was extremely obese and now I'm almost at my goal weight . With that experiense I would say that it really works . I would say that all points yhat mark spoke of is extremely important . See YOU

this original question has been asked 100's of times. There have been that many different answers. Half of the easy answer to the original question is yes. The other half is how bad do you want to lose weight or stop smoking? Are you committed to the goal or are you looking for magic? Self-Hypnosis is a powerful tool because it helps you reach the deepest areas of your mind to accomplish what you want. It is like wight loss and stop smoking...you do it a day at a time. You tap into your mind through self-hypnosis the same way, you practice it a day at a time. Now you have all the information you need. Get a good book to help you....www.HealthyIdeasToday.com

Yes it works! Hydration is one of the keys to a healthy weight, the others are connecting with your body, treating it respectfully and learning to manage your emotions without using food.

Yes it really works. Hypnosis helps a lot in stop smoking. But before join sessions you must have strong will power and ready to help yourself.

Bridget Coughlin is professional hypnotherapist helping people to weight loss, stop smoking, improve sports & academic performance, reducing stress, sleep better and more.

I don't doubt people can lose their weight via hypnotherapy.

But to my puzzle, why are some hypnotists overweight?
