I know this seems a silly question, but I can never find a clear answer for whether you should use 'I' or 'you' when using suggestions? and is there any possible way to test how far you are into self hypnosis, I have been listening to an mp3 for about 2 weeks now and I have seen no results and I dont know what I am doing wrong? any help will be well appreciated thanks. |

Hello Lozriz9---Whenever this question has arisen,I have always taught that you can program both ways---using the pronoun you, with your first name and then again using the pronoun "I" again with your first name. Many have given a name to their creative subconscious. One inventor told the class. " I call my subconscious "Old Charlie". In his recorded suggestions, he began with "Old Charlie, I have some good ideas to present to you and I know you will approve and accept them." Of course the fault may not be in the pronouns but in the structure of the suggestion program itself. It this a commercial mp3 or one that you recorded for yourself? This is not a silly question at all - in fact it is quite common one. You will most likely get replies to this from both sides suggesting that one works better than the other. Just as different Hypnotherapists use different approaches for this so do different approaches work differently for different people.
It would appear you seem to prefer "I" from the writing style in your post.
Self Hypnosis can take a bit longer than a few weeks to master and you may not be able to see, feel or accurately measure changes. For this reason most people recommend a one-on-one session with a Hypnotherapist so you have someone who can act as your guide through the process. Almost all can also teach you some form of self hypnosis during your session. MP3s are fairly generic and good ones are made to work across a wide range of people, so they cannot focus in on your own personal situation like a private session can.
The depth of your hypnotic state doesn't really matter so trying to measure or test it would not be a good use of your time. You can see a good discussion of this topic if you do a search on “depth of trace†in this forum.

Both replies are valid, but I might add that in trying to save money, you must be prepared to expend work instead, it is a trade off. Taking training costs money, but is faster, more effective, and you have more confidence in the results. Doing it yourself can take much longer, so be prepared. No need for testing, and it is not possible to tell you what tests will work for you anyway. |

OK,
Out of the box, I don't have as much experience as some of the people here, but I have had success with subliminals when combining them with hypnosis.
In the case of hypnosis you need to consider what your subject responds to better and use that prevelently in your session. I have had subjects that respond to a command as well as another would respond to a permissive suggestion, while yet others did better with affirmations.
What are the differences: Command: An authoritative statement posibly (not necessarily) taking the form of an order. "you are", "you will", or just "you", *feel the weight in your arms and legs spread throughout your body as it becomes more relaxed, heavier and heavier.
Premissive: A suggestion given to a subject that facilitates their making the decision to accomplish said goal. "You may feel", "You might find" *that as you sit there and listen to my voice it becomes easier and easier to relax.
((IMPORTANT: below - best if used in subliminals or in hypnosis, once general session is complete, before any post hypnotice suggestions. I find that repeating affirmations each three times slowly and consecutively (so the mind can absorb) will lend itself to the best results))
Affirmation: A short statement ALWAYS MADE FROM THE POSSESIVE, that dictates an action is being accomplished or has already been accomplished. "I am", "I will", "I have", I am becoming thin - I will eat smaller portions at mealtime - I have more energy for exercise.
I know a lot of my colleagues, may not fully agree with me on this. That's ok. This is a forum to share ideas. That's what I am doing. In that spirit I am going to share my reasoning with you.
From the time we are born we begin learning. Sounds, shape, color, touch. As we grow this expands into other things. As we learn these things this helps develope our charachter. . .who we are. Well. . . we learn good things - and - we learn bad things. In a sense we are all a collection of habits. How do we learn? One of the major ways, if not the major way is through, repetition. A good habit we now have may be because our parents "made us" do it at an early age. A bad habit . . . well, that's something we cant seem to stop doing. (repetition) So what do you do. You change/replace the ones you dont want through repetition. Hypnosis/Affirmations (and subliminals) help do this by bypassing the conscious mind's defense mechanism, the conscious mind. Your subconscious (or in my opinion superconscious mind - because it never shuts off) is where all these changes take place and are made permenant. In the normal learing processes the problem is our conscious mind acts as a filter for the subconscious. In order to make change you need to get past the analytical part of your mind that has decided, "This is the way we have always done it. . . this is easier. . . DO THIS!" Some people can do this better than others. These people are considered "Strong Willed", "Single Minded". The people that decide to do something and do it have less of a herd time "really" convencing themselves that they want to. They can get through that filter. Others are not as fortunate.
So what I would suggest to you is if you are doing self hypnosis, wheather it is a subliminal cd or a recorded session, speak from the possesive/affirmations. In a recorded hypnosis script these possesive statements do not have to be short or concise as mine were, beucause you are trying to get as much "hypnotherapy" benefit out of a recording as you can. A recording can only lead you in one direction however, where a qualified hypntherapist can guide you along what "may be" a meandering path. (Two to four weeks on average is when you can start noticing the benefits of any recordings) Depending on the effectiveness of your suggestions.
All that said, this is a rather simplistic explination but that's the way I comunicate best. There are alot of factors to a successful therapy, so many not covered here, but I digress. The question was "I" or "you". Does that help?
