I have started a self hypnosis program. I am following scripts from a tape recorder. My biggest problem is that during my sessions I often fall asleep (and I am already getting adequate amounts of sleep). Have you encountered this before? If so, any solutions?

Falling asleep is a common problem. The easiest solution is to listen to the tape in a less comfortable position. There is a compromise position that allows for awareness and comfort at the same time.

How do you know you are falling asleep? Could you maybe just drifting into a nice trance? You might find out by continuing to listen to your tape, vary the time of day. If you consciously resist going into trance what's the point in listening to the tape? Trust your uncosncous to hear the tape. Here's the handout I give my clients concerning self-hypnosis. Hope it helps.
Relaxing & Succeeding With Self Hypnosis
1. Define the time you want to spend in self hypnosis. Tell yourself how long you want to work on your suggestions. You'll be amazed at the accuracy of your internal clock. If you are concerned, you can use an alarm clock.
2. Write a very short positive note. Define what you what to work on. Keep it positive! For example: "stay smoke-free" - not "quit smoking", " be comfortable" - not "stop sneezing", "eat sensibly" - not - "don't overeat"
3. Locate a comfortable location. A location that is quiet and not too brightly lighted is desirable.
4. Get into a comfortable position. You can sit or lay down, but if you are sitting, you probably won't be tempted to fall asleep.
5. Review your preview note three times. Read the note you have written three times. After the third time, just drop the note. Reading and thus internalizing your goal reinforces that you are turning the work over to your unconscious.
6. Tell yourself how you wish to "awaken". Usually it will be "feeling wide awake and refreshed". Other times you'll want to awaken "ready for a great night's sleep," or "focused on the.......(fill in the blank), or "motivated to accomplish....(fill in the blank) or any other feeling or goal
7. Relax and begin breathing deeply & slowly. Relaxation is the key to effective positive results. Inhale for the count of 8, hold for 8, exhale for 8. Touching your thumb and forefinger together, use your shortcut phrase “blue diamond†and inhale for the count of eight, hold for 8, and exhale for 8
8. Begin to induce your trance. Touching your thumb and forefinger together repeat to yourself the short-cut phase "Blue Diamond" and continue your deep breathing. Begin breathing deeply, in for 8, holding for 8, exhaling for 8. Settle into a nice comfortable position. Move the neck, shoulders, head, as necessary to be comfortable. Continue the nice breathing pattern.
9. Go deeper into trance. As you feel yourself beginning to relax, count down form 10. Continue breathing in for 8, holding for 8, and exhaling for 8. As you count down, touching the thumb and forefinger together, repeat the shortcut phase "Blue Diamond" after each even number (8, 6, and if you are still aware, 4 & 2.) Let a background sound (the hum of the air conditioner, the drip of a faucet, etc.) help you relax. Let the feel of the fabric of your pants, chair etc. help you relax. And just continue your breathing and relaxing.
10. Relax and enjoy the experience. Your unconscious can and will now do the work. You can just enjoy the experience.
11. Repeat the above procedure often. The more you practice the faster you are able to enter self-hypnosis. It becomes easier and easier to have your unconscious to do marvelous work and obtain terrific results.
Why "Blue Diamond"? We teach the shortcut phase "Blue Diamond" to our clients during their first session. Blue is a very relaxing color and we use it as tool to promote calm and peacefulness. Have you ever heard the song " I'm Just a Lump of Coal, but I'm Going to be a Diamond Someday."? Why not let our unconscious turn us from a lump of coal into a diamond ........ extremely bright, desirable, hard, valuable, and durable.

From: StevenKarl Sent: 4/5/2002 6:28 PM Thanks for the response. "How do you know you are asleep?" Because I don't wake up until the end of the tape when the recorder clicks, waking me up. The snoring is also a give away.

Reading a post with due care and attention, I often come across a clue or two, and you seem to offer this. First you speak of a "program of self hypnosis," and then reffer to a "script.' From this I assume that you are using a tape made by someone else, and if this is so, the answer is simple. Most such tapes are very inferior to a face to face encounter with a good professional, so I am not surprised that you fall asleep. If there is a money back guarrantee, use it, if not you are out of luck, and shouldn't be surprised since you chose to use the cheap way out. Of course, you could keep the tape for a time when you are having a problem sleeping, it will avoid the cost of sleeping pills. Terry |
