Who says you "went wrong"? She relaxed didn't she? So what if she went to sleep; you didn't specify that she stay awake did you? (G) Terry

OK, you want a serious answer, so I'll give you one. First of all, you invited your mother to relax. right? She was very tired after a hard days work, and this was an invitation to sleep in her mind. I have had clients do that, and complain about it, but stopped complaining when they got the results they asked for. Of course, in my case they only fell asleep when practising self hypnosis as I directed them to do, but it's still the same thing.

You actually did great! You suggested to your mother that you relax, and she did. Actually, it's common for a subject to snore while in trance without being actually 'asleep'. When this happens to me, I generally ask them something like this: "If you are still following my voice, please raise your right index finger." (or thumb, or whatever finger appears to me most comfortable for the subject to use, depending on how her hands are places during the session.) If your subject does raise her finger, she is simply well relaxed and does not realize she is snoring. If she does not raise her finger I generally do something like this, "I am going to gently touch your right index finger." Then I use one of my fingers to lift their finger and I ask them to keep it there. Do this very gently, so as not to startle the client. Repeat if necessary until she has come up in awareness to be back in trance state. If your subject has a tendency to drift deeper into relaxation that you want for the session, during the induction, ask the subject to lift her finger. You will then be able to guage her level of trance by her ability to keep her finger lifted. If she drifts into sleep, or if she is coming up to wakeful awareness, her finger will want to lower again. When that happens, gently remind her: "Keep your right index finger raised, please." Also, your subject may drift into sleep if your voice pacing is too fast or too slow for their interest. A little more experience with inductions and you'll learn to pace yourself for your subjects needs.

For what reason did you want to hypnotise your mother Not just to relax her? |
