Those of you familiar with Nick Kemp's work will know that he synthesizes
ideas from the field of neuro-linguistic programming with his more than two
decades experience of various approaches to meditation. Well, having had the
good fortune to attend this, his first public seminar dealing with his
approaches, I can honestly say that I experienced a synergy of ideas rather
just a synthesis.
A lot of Nick's seminar style involves using language patterns, NLP style
sub-modality shifts and metaphor in a story telling style, opening and
closing loops to assist the participants into useful and resourceful states
in preparation for meditation. However, first and foremost is a hands on
approach. You don't get much theory with Nick. He also operates a multiple
levels training plan so that he can go with the mood and the energy of the
group while staying on track with his subject matter.
We started with some voice work, exploring the different ways in which the
experience of chanting and hearing vowels sounds are internally represented.
We then built up with some rapport exercises exploring relationships between
location and perception with our partners, both in terms of the internal and
external representations, before moving into some more complex group mantra
work.
Later we explored some mandala work. Nick clearly loves pushing technology
that represents information in sensory modalities to the limit (you only
have to hear the continuously improving audio quality of his CDs to realize
this), and he has set up an LCD projector to project some subtly changing
patterns. With some subtly directed attention throughout the exercise
combined with a lot of choice orientated language, I found this section of
the seminar produced some profound sensory changes but perhaps more
interestingly, some subtle but profound changes in the internal experience
of self having a distinctly spatial and geometric quality.
I can't hope to convey the experience of such a workshop in a few
paragraphs. I'm not sure I can convey it at all, as one doesn't go to such
seminars with the intention of remaining objective, but this synergy of NLP
and meditation techniques continues to demonstrate to me that NLP approaches
can assist in taking us to the borders of the transpersonal efficiently and
quickly.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in Nick Kemp's first ever
Human Alchemy Masterclass.
.we played with sound, and the various effects different sounds had on our
bodies and perceptions... and how subtle changes can have major effects. and
how hearing a sound is different from making a sound. and how this is
different from making a sound internally.
.and we became aware how we responded to various paces and styles of
music... we noticed how the conversation changed tempo. and even topic.
.and as we elicited our own and others' sub-modality constructs in response
to trance inductions. we tried on each others experiences and built and
customised our own experience. and what colour and shape is that sound?
.and to experience a trance induction backed by the most beautifully
ethereal operatic music. this was so very moving. and Nick has such a talent
for combining trance work with music in the most exquisite ways. the words
and music working together in perfect harmony. to create states.
.and everyone shared their relaxation trigger words. and Nick masterfully
orchestrated the participants to use those trigger words in an improvised,
dynamic and flowing trance-script. to create a 3 dimensional multiple
induction. to elicit a most profound relaxation experience for meditative
exploration.
.and we chanted mantras specially constructed to elicit certain states. and
we stared Mandalas. and we looked through our third-eye. and some of us went
astral travelling.
.and I found it a most enjoyable and educational experience.
