Hi Am keen to train to become a Hypnotherapist (at a school) and to set up in business as a resettlement from my current occupation in 5 yrs time.
In order to compile a business plan and to assess a realistic time scale I wonder if any one can advise me regarding the potential earnings in a trade that is very difficult to assess demand for ?
I understand the average charge per hour at the lower end of the scale but have no idea how to guage the frequency of customers (on average)
Obviously as you become established and if you put the effort into making your name known the client base will build but what is a guideline basepoint ?
Thanks |

Wow, you do ask a difficult question, or should I say, a series of difficult questions. Nobody can tell you how to build a business except you. You will need to assess were you intend to establish yourself, what the market seems to offer you according to your skill and intent to practise either as a specialist or in general practise that requires you to know much more about other areas of experise besides how to produce the trance. Remember it requires skill in many areas to practise hypnosis, since clients will come to you expecting you to be able to help them with all sorts of problems. Have you done any training as yet? If not, you are jumping the gun in my opinion, because unless you have a love of the practise of hypnosis, you are likely to fail in that business faster than in any other.... If money is your main goal, specialize in one area only, and be good at it. Weight loss for example can be very profitable, up to $300.000.00 per year if you get sufficient clientelle, and are very good at what you do... At the lower end of the scale, and assuming you are a good businessman, an income of $80,000.00 per year is reasonable, both these figures being gross, not net. Remember, even at the lower end, you do need to be a good businessman, capable of bringing in clients with reasonable frequency.... You will need about two to five years to build the business, unless you are very good, in which case make it two max. Cost during this period will be for office space and furnishings only, the rest of your needs is in your head, bought and paid for.... I would be interested to know what caused you to make the decission you did about changing occupations? What made you think of hypnosis as a viable alternative to the way you earn your income now? In conclusion, your last question, "frequency of customers" is impossible to answer. How good are you at self advertising? Newspapers are slow to show any return for expenditure, especially in a city, but talk shows often provide an excellent kickstart to a business that is not selling goods etc, but services that are rare. Everything I have said to date depends on you being very good at what you do, word travels fast, both good and bad, and if you are able to help clients quickly and effectively, they will bring more in. However, if you get a bad name, you are sunk.... |

Thanks for the reply, At the moment I am a serving police officer in the UK. I retire in 5yrs time at the age of 49yrs old. Hypnotherapy / NLP has interested me for a while now and although untrained I can see many similiarities with my current work ! I am intending to do a school course next year, then to start in business basically part time so that I can build up the experience etc before leaping into the big wide world. This is a completely new venture, I beleive I am capable but only time will tell. hopefully within the 5 years I will have worked out any speciallity I may have. With a police pension behind me I dont need to earn mega bucks - just enjoy my work, occupy my brain and continue to help people..... |

Sounds good, at least you have five years to find out if it is what you want, and if you can handle it. If money is not a large need, I suggest you specialize so as to be the best you can in one area. You might even find that some of your clientelle come from the force you are retiring from, since stress is one use for hypnosis, and stress is something many police officers suffer from. Stress is also a very easy area to work in..... |

Best of luck to you TrphyKev- Why wait for 5 years- the area that you are in will be excellent to extend your services for when retirement comes you'll be an easy crossover with careers- there are many ways you may want to pursue your training while maintaining your first avenue as a police officer- I am curious also though- why choose hypnosis? Why ponder finances, start up costs, etc. when it can easily be achieved in combo and lead to greater areas than what you expected--- Keep a positive goal my friend that's wonderful! Many police officers would benefit wonderfully from Hypnotherapy tools-Wishing you Success 2005 C White CI

Hello ^Trophykev and a Merry Christmas to All- I have a different view about specializimg in weight control as a way to generate income. Creating income as the primary reason for entering this great profession is not good enough. You must have or develop a passion, a fire in the belly, for helping your fellow man. As a police officer, you have already shown your humanitarian impulses. You have risked your life and limb to serve and protect your fellow man.I thank you and salute you. Do not start out as a weight control specialist, instead, work with every problem and issue that a client presents. In weight control there are most often underlying issues to be uncovered including denial of one's sexuality, parental and environmenal conditioning as well as genetic factors. Just to hypnpotize someone and give them suggestions from a script will become a dead end, leading to boredom, burn out and eventual heartbreak. Seek out the finest instruction, with an instructor of reputation, develop a good professional library, and practice, practice, practice. In the first year if you meet all expenses and break even you have done well. At the end of the second year, your referrals will have built to a profitable level. From there, it gets much easier. I have lauched the careers of more than 5,000 hypnotherapists (world-wide) in my fifty years of service as a hypnotherapist and teacher/trainer, Not all have survived, but I am extremely proud of those who have. PS. Don't forget your continuing education seminars and conferences. With Respect to all, Gil Boyne

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and comments. I hadnt realised what a friendly group I was considering joining.
Your comments have confirmed my thoughts and having succesfully acheived a new posting next year (weekends off at last) I will sign up to the Washington school in Manchester UK with Shaun Brookhouse.
My reasoning for becoming a hypnotist are admirably summed up by mark gil - i am a people person, used to trying to help people resolve problems and issues. I wish I had NLP, and rapport training included in my police training 25yrs ago !! My stress counselling was courtesy of Jack Daniels ;-)
I look forward to meeting with some of you in the future.
Regards and a very happy christmas

Hello Again, You have chosen a fine teacher in Shaun Brookhouse. I presented the ACHE Pioneer Award to Shaun at our 2003 International Hypnotherapy Conference in Glendale, Calif. I was the featured speaker at the Hypnotherapy Conference that Shaun presents in London. He is truly a gifted teacher. You will learn all you need to know to become a successful hypnotherapist. Please give Shaun my regards. Merry Christmas! With Respect, |
