I note that there are requests for information on Forensic hypnosis, and also on Alchemical hypnosis, I would like an explanation of what these are, as nobody to date has satisfied me that they are separate entities to general hypnosis. It is my understanding that both of them are catch phrases to get clients and not legitimate entities in their own right. Terry |

Hello,
Here is some info on Forensic Hypnosis. This is not one of those gimmick names intended to attract attention and sell Hypnosis. This is a real Hypnosis career - Most often, it is used as a tool to ensure accuracy in eyewitness testimony.
There are many related stories about the police calling in a Forensic Hypnotherapist to help solve cases. Whether it is to help someone recall a license plate number or help get a more accurate description of a suspect.
It is never used to gain evidence as that is not admissible in a court of law, since an active imagination can take the investigation just about anywhere. Also sometimes, a person can have a false memory and actually believe what they incorrectly remember as reality.
Here are a few articles about this:

Forensic Hypnosis -V -Therapeutic Hypnosis

Just a note on Alchemical Hypnosis since it was mentioned here -
In almost all cases where this term is used it is in regard to having an interactive session between the subject and Hypnotherapist.
I don't know why some people have the need to differentiate between a regular session and one where the two have a discussion while in hypnosis - since most hypnosis sessions work this way these days.
I also noticed that most articles using this term "Alchemical Hypnosis" are older ones from before 1998 or so.
There is one training company that liked it so much that they go by the name and teach it:
http://www.AlchemyInstitute.com
Their explanation of the term is here:
http://www.alchemyinstitute.com/qanda.htm
Since this is the Forensic Hypnosis board it would be inappropriate to discuss this here (I only posted this answer to the above question here) so if you'd like to have a discussion about this (I, for one, do not) please start a new thread in the appropriate board.

It would be nice to see some eg factual-newspaper evidence regarding posotive results from forensic hypnosis. Am i right in thinking that forensic hypnosis is not admissable in a court of law. If someone has information to the contrary, please back it up with court transcripts etc |

The Hypnosis is a Forensic tool used to discover details about the case - not to develop testimony or evidence. Hypnosis memory in most cases would not be admissible in court but a witness's memory can be tested and checked using it.
An example case may read something like this:
An elderly couple witnesses a hit-and-run accident. The couple's memory of the event is limited. Under Hypnosis in separate sessions they both replay the event in their minds in slow motion. One remembers the beginning numbers of the license plate and the other remembers the end numbers. Upon tracing the car to the owners address the car is discovered with damage from the accident. The investigation proceeds from there. The testimony of the two witnesses is never going to be used in court as they didn't remember anything relevant prior to the hypnosis. So using Hypnosis to gather additional information from them is a logical step. The car then becomes the best evidence and the couple is not needed to testify.
I don't believe a law enforcement agency would apply Forensic Hypnosis to a person who was going to be a witness, in most cases, although it has been done to ensure accuracy in some eyewitness testimony - after the person has made their statements.
There is a good graph of this here: Forensic Hypnosis -V -Therapeutic Hypnosis
Some of the other articles I listed above have some very good information about this, direct from Forensic Professionals. |

The Forensic Application of Hypnosis is used primarly by Law Enforcement in an effort to assist a witness or victim to recall forgotten information. Hypnotically refreshed recall is admissible in court in Texas. Police officers who use hypnosis in Texas must be certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education which is responsible for police officer certification. Texas is the only state in the USA which establishes by statute mandatory training, testing, and certification of police officers who use hypnotic interviewing trechniques with witnesses and victims of crimes.
Upon completion of a 50 hour course the commissioned police officer is then adminstered a written examination by TCLEOSE.
If you are interested in additional information related to the application of hypnosis, several relevant articles can be found at www.marxhowell.com which you have permission to print. You have my permission to copy, reproduce, and disseminate all articles which I authored as long as you give credit. Hopefully this information will be helpful to your inquiry.

Wow, I just stumbled across this particular sub-forum and I have to say I'm absolutely fascinated. Forensic hypnosis isn't an area I'm familar with at all (albeit having had experience with regression hypnosis in previous work I've done). Thanks for posting up this fascinating info - I know that this information is a little out of date, and things might have changed since '06, but HypnoDoc's example of HOW it's used with a really clear example is helpful. So thank you! |

I have been in law enforcement for almost 40 yrs. in the past I have not used my forensic hypnosis once in any police related incidents. This due to the fact that each state has different court rulings on the subject. Mostly forensic hypnosis is like the polygraph, not admissible in court and open to attack, not proven scientifically.
It is said that psychologists should be the only ones to conduct these types of investigations however, they are not trained police officers that know police practices and procedures, rules of evidence, or how to properly conduct an interview. Because of this, cases are thrown out of court. The only exception is in Texas where they are police professionals and have adequate training, and do it right. Forensic hypnosis is rarely used any where else, I know that in NJ, forget it. The best bet is to work for lawyers that want to get information regarding accidents or witness/victim information. This leads them in the right direction to further their client investigations. For working with police departments, forget it! Better off doing CSI work, or work with a PI. |

Forensic hypnosis is an interesting topic if you ask me. Forensic hypnosis can be only used in rare cases mostly because it can't be scientifically proven in court. I wrote a short article about an introduction to forensic hypnosis. Anyone interested you can check it out.
