Accident victim put into a trance

A BRACKNELL man used hypnosis to calm a young woman seriously injured in a car crash.
Professional hypnotherapist Marc Bishop was driving along the A330 at Hawthorn Hill from Brack-nell to Maidenhead around 1.50pm on Thursday when he came across the scene where two cars had been involved minutes earlier in a collision short of the junction with the A3095.
Mr Bishop, whose business Mind Open is in Charles Square, Bracknell, stopped to help the driver of a beige Fiat, a woman in her 40s, who was trapped and rescued by firemen before being taken by helicopter to hospital.
But an off-duty police-woman, who also chanced by the accident scene, asked Mr Bishop to help the other driver, an 18-year-old Maidenhead woman.
She had serious head and leg injuries in her blue Honda Civic on the other side of the road, and he used hypnosis to calm her down and talk to her while ambulance staff rushed to the scene.
She was also flown by air ambulance to Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, where he visited her on Friday.
Mr Bishop said the woman had now taken him on to help her make a full recovery, and he believed this could be a test case of the use of hypnotherapy.
Mr Bishop became interested in hypnotherapy after it helped stop him from smoking and eating chocolate.
He said he first found the woman to be hysterical, screaming and in a lot of pain, but that he helped her to 'not acknowledge the pain' and yet remain responsive, calm and coherent.
He said: "I started to induce her into a hypnotic trance and got her into a workable state within about five minutes."
Bracknell ambulance station commander Steve Hartley said: "He did a superb job. He was chatting to her and giving breathing exercises and calming her right down.
"He was talking to one end and we were dealing with the other end. He got her to concentrate on him, which made our job a lot easier."
Mr Hartley added: "Shock is the biggest killer - that's where everything starts packing up and your system starts closing down. That's the reaction to the trauma, but because he was talking to her and giving breathing exercises he calmed her down and made her more resilient."
