Hi all,
I'm a hypnotherapist with a small practice in Port Perry, Ontario. Here's my problem:
I have a 17 year old client that I've been seeing regularly. Her parents have been paying for her sessions, and we've completed our work together (as outlined by her parents). Now, she'd like to see me privately, in order to do some past life work as well as breast augmentation.
Because I know her parents are opposed to past life therapy, I'm reluctant to go ahead with the sessions. Personally I feel that at 17 you should be considered adult enough to make your own decisions, but personal feelings don't always make sound business decisions. I have let her know my concerns and encouraged her to discuss this openly with her parents, but she seems reluctant to do so.
Any thoughts or advice on the matter?

| Don't do it. Tell her you'll be happy to if she gets her parents permission, or when she turns 18. |

It's always nice when I have my instincts confirmed  I know I'll feel more comfortable with her parents' permission, or knowing she no longer needs their permission at the age of 18.
I did receive a couple of friendly and supportive emails just before my computer crashed, so I apologize for a lack of response. I remember Bruce sending me a nice email, so thanks Bruce!
My computer had to be reformatted, so it looks like I'll be spending the next few days reloading programs and restoring files, oh ick...

Hello All, I can't speak about Canadian law, but in most states in the USA, to hypnotise a minor without a written parental consent or the presence of a parent or guardian has a similar status to statutory rape. A minor is not legally capable of giving consent.
Early in my career I did many high school assembly hypnotism shows.
Then a high school (in another state) was sued by the parents of a volunteer subject. They said their civil rights had been violated because hypnotizing their daughter was a violation of their religious beliefs.The school district settled out of court. From then on whenever a school booked a hypnotist, the vice-principal would give parental consent forms to students who wished to volunteer. These consent forms had to be turned in two weeks prior to the show and a copy was mailed to the parents. When it was showtime the vice pricipal would read aloud the names of those who had returned the signed parental consent forms. No one else could volunteer. You also spoke of how your feelings differed from the parents feelings.
Are you there to deal with your feelings about their objections or are you there to obey the parents directive for their child?
