I'm hoping someone can give me some advice or info about finding a hypnotherapist. I've spent most of the day trying to find some guidelines to follow - i.e., hypnotherapists should be licensed or certified by such and such organization, etc... All I've been able to find is promotional websites. Should I take these seriously. Some seem a little slick and, being a natural cynic, I can't help but think of snake oil salesmen.
Should I ask my psychotherapist for a recommendation? I feel weird asking her - as if I was saying she wasn't doing a good enough job. (yes, I also feel guilty when I go to someone else for a haircut and not my usual hairdresser - I've got issues )
It's just that I'm having a problem with writer's block - an on-and-off problem for years. But I need to finish some work in the next month or so. It's very important to me and I feel like I need help fast. And is this just a quick fix solution? Will this work for me?
Any thoughts or suggestions? |

Hello,
If you’re looking for consistency in the Certification and/or Registration process of professional Hypnotherapists you can stop looking. All states in the US have different criteria, each state is different and some have none what-so-ever. Don’t even ask about different countries…
If you are currently in any type of therapy you should always ask your therapist for advice on alternatives. There are many possible factors at play (medications, existing therapy, etc.) and make sure you tell the Hypnotherapist you are seeing a Psychotherapist (and any medications) as well.
You can do some research on “self-hypnosis†since writers block is not that difficult an issue to deal with (unlike serious illness or losing hundreds of pounds) and you may want to see a Hypnotherapist for a one-on-one session in order to help you get started. Many Hypnotherapists will give you all the tools to do self-hypnosis during your visit and in that way you can adjust your self-hypnosis as time passes.
I know during my one-on-one sessions with clients I like to give them instructions on how they can feel just as relaxed as they are during their session at anytime they want simply by placing their thumb and index finger together. This simple task returns them to the relaxing state where they were during the session and they can give themselves positive advice. Once this hypnotic suggestion is in place you can use it over and over again. Most Hypnotherapists do this same type of thing and you can certainly ask them to.
As far as the “slick web sites†are concerned, you are right you should look for someone who has a really lame, amateurish web site and hope that they spent all their money on Hypnosis school. Seriously though, one has nothing to do with the other and you should always go with your own gut feelings after talking with the person with whom you think you want to work with or reading all the documentation with self help audio programs.
Some audio program makers even offer custom tapes that they make just for your specific area of focus. You give them the target area and some support info and they create a personalized tape with your name and own language in it. Any and all of these things can only help, as they are all based on positive motivation, as long as you are not under medication and/or involved in strict therapy (paranoia, schizophrenia, etc.) from a therapist.
Hope this helps!
