Hey guys,
Have read some topics on this forum from time to time as Hypnosis, NLP and self improvement is an interest i have had for quite a while. This is my first post and have some queries as to the use of negatives in hypnosis tapes.
From learning NLP (practitioner certification) we are told that negatives are not absorbed by the unconcious mind. For example, the old adage 'Dont think of a blue bike'. However, i know that negative suggestions are commonly used and work in hypnosis, as in 'You are totally relaxed and in a few seconds you cannot open your eyes ....try to open your eyes' etc.
What i am having trouble understanding with this concept is what my unconcious mind is actually being told in a hypnosis tape i have been using daily (by Hypnotica). The specific suggestions and commands he states are below:
"you're gonna find more confidence in 'yourself' (then repeated with 'your abilities', 'your self belief') .... and as your self confidence .. begins to become ... stronger ... and stronger then yesterday ... but not as strong as tomorrow ... but it will be stronger than it was yesterday ... but not yet as strong as it will be tomorrow"
(and talking about misjudgements people make) "you dont mind people making mistakes ... you dont mind people being wrong sometimes ... because you know whats inside yourself"
I am having trouble understanding what these commands and suggestions are actually telling my sub/unconcious mind. Can someone shed light on this please?
Thankyou in advance |

The intent of the audio is to build expectation with out over-promising. This would make it more believable.
Using different words for the same concept (abilities, belief, confidence) expands the impact and makes it more likely to apply focus to the word(s) that resonate for the listener.
Knowing what's inside yourself (abilities, belief, confidence) implies your sense of self would be less dependent upon others opinions/misjudgments.
Some NLP/hypno training puts a LOT of focus on saying the mind does not hear negative words (not, no, won't don't) but this theory is shown to not be reliable.
Different people, different wording, and context will affect how the mind perceives what is being said. |

Thanks for your reply Patrick.
My main concern was with the 'stronger ... and stronger than yesterday ... but not yet as strong as tomorrow' part. It seems to me as if its saying you are confident now but not as confident as tomorrow. So the mind is always striving to be that confidence tomorrow, sending it into a loop as we all know 'tomorrow' never comes.
As you do say it is interpreted differently for different minds. It is only a part of my meditation/affirmation and hypnosis daily practices, however wanted someone to comment on how effective this sort of wording may be.
I do use affirmations that are similar to these suggestions, with meditation that has helped me to remain confident, calm and centered in the most dire of circumstances. |

I think it is a form of "hedging his (the audio creator's) bets.
Some people listening will not be feeling confident and if/when they realize that fact, then the rest of the audio loses it's rapport with the listener. If room for improvement is created in tomorrow, and allows for today to not be as "good" as desired.
In the several thousand sessions I have done, I have never seen where the use of the "no" words caused undesired results.
Though a hypnotist does have to be careful with wording/phrasing. |

Thats great to hear patrick. Thankyou again for your reply. I am going to continue using it and will let you know of my results. It is counter-intuitive to think that it may not be of help to me. |
