Hi everyone
I am considering starting a Hypnotherapy business.
I am wondering if anyone here can let me know how easy or difficult it is to get clients? I am also wondering what would be a typical hourly rate that you could expect to get.
I don't want to go to all the trouble and expense of getting qualified in something where there is no demand for my services.
I recently spoke to a Hypnotherapy school and they said that you can make a living at it and could charge $150 per hour but they have a vested interest so I want a neutral opinion.
I feel this would be of interest to many people here so I appreciate any replies in advance.
I feel that it would be different in each country and even each region, especially in Australia where people can now get up to 12 free Psychology sessions per year from the government so this would reduce the potential success of someone that only had a Hypnotherapy qualification.
I am in Sydney, Australia. |

Hi,
This is a difficult question to answer, but as you are in Sydney, and so am I, I will help you out.
There is always room for a good therapist, and that is what people need.
What people realise they may not need is 10 to 12 sessions of CBT, even if it is covered by medicare.
Also, hypnotherapy tends to be skewed towards helping people with very specific anxiety issues, addictions and habits, whereas psychologists are more likely to be referred people with depression and anxiety.
However, as you become more experienced and qualified, you realise you can help in an alternative way people who see psychologists but don't feel it addresses their concern.
You might be warned that your study in your new therapy practice will never cease and you might find yourself continually studying towards counselling and psychology qualifications to augment your initial hypnotherapy training.
I do have a very busy therapy practice, but have been practicing for a long time.
The average fee for hypnotherapy in the building I practice in is at least $200 per hour. One guy charges $275.
But as I have established clients I like to keep my fees at a more modest and affordable rate. The recommended psychological society fees these days is up to around $220 per hour.
I think it might be more difficult for new people moving into the field to attract new clients, these days. It is different once you are established. But it was much easier for me to get established when I moved into private practice.
Also, once you get going you realise this field is not about making money - not if you want to be a good therapist.
It is much more about assisting people. If you can do that, your practice will grow; easier said than done.
This is one of the many paradoxes you will face in this field full of paradoxes.
Hope this helps. |

Great answer Jeremy - thanks for your contributions in the forum.
There are also a lot of good tips for advertising and bootstrapping your practice in other posts within this Business of Hypnosis forum. Browse around a bit and/or use the search and you will easily find them.
Good luck in your new venture. |
