Hello all!
I'm totally new to hypnosis and NLP and I'm hoping to have some questions answered using this forum.
I often see "NLP" and "excellence" paired together in the context that, through NLP, you can adopt the mindset of someone committed to excellence. That led me to think about other personalities: The confident one, the bubbly one, the hard worker, the perfectionist, etc. Can you really take on nearly any persona with NLP? Is it that easy?
Say a client approaches a hypnotist or NLP practitioner and says they want to embody an alter ego that is: confident, regal, genuinely happy, forgiving, hardworking, outgoing, etc. (all achievable with NLP) BUT their alter ego was also: ambidextrous, walked a certain way, talked a certain way, and other things dealing with body language rather than attitude. Could he or she make that happen? Can you actually transform your entire personality, attitude, AND body language with hypnosis or NLP? It sounds like a bit of magic.
I was reading a little into hypnosis and I found something called Deep Trance Identification. While in trance, could you review your new persona and emerge a new person? If any of this is even possible, how quick would the process be? Would it be relatively easy in relation to traditional therapy? If you know EXACTLY who you want to be, can you become that person?
I apologize in advance for my ignorance on the subject.

Maybe you can take on an artificial personality short term, through NLP or just acting. But it will be artificial.
In the way I understand your question, the answer is "no".
More advanced hypnosis can help a person resolve deep emotional issues which CAN make a person feel and act quite differently (improved). |

In theory you can learn anything, once you have experienced something - like riding a bike for instance - and done it a few times until you are proficient, then you can ride a bike. So if you wanted to walk like somebody and you took special note of how they walked in minute detail and copied them a few times similar to riding the bike you would be able to walk like them. The mind doesn't need to actually do something to experience it so you can do it several times mentally and learn that way. Evidence - Used by sports people to mentally rehearse and several experiments that show body change from mental only exercise. The results when this kind of therapy is done under hypnosis are generally not long lasting. I use a similar technique for driving test nerves and one off events like that. However, it is not that easy to 'come out' as a changed person as Patric already said because we also have to consider our emotions and the limits that they are playing in behaviour. The mind body connection says that we think down and act down or we look up and feel more lifted and vice versa. The sub conscious emotional restricts always win hands down though until these emotional conflicts are resolved. |
