Hello,
I checked the search feature, and couldn't find anything directly related...
I had my first hypnotherapy session this past tuesday - although the hypnotherapist I found seemed to be very sweet and experienced, I was unable to get into trance.
A little background on myself - I've been practicing zen buddhism for a little while, and meditating off and on for years - I believed this would be a major benefit going into a hypnotherapy session, and yet I found myself unable to fully let go. Although I felt a familiar relaxation come on, felt it deepen and deepen further, I couldn't stop focusing on my breathing. No matter how relaxed I got, the need to manually breathe would not let me go!
I am a college student so the price of these sessions is quite out of my normal range, however I refuse to let my interest go. I was going for a past life regression, any advice on where to turn next? |

Hi jalmeda If you specifically wish to target PLR or self regression I'd say get few CD from reputed authors, one that comes to mind is Brian Weiss, although personally I found him to talk too much. Another favorite of mine is Lee Stone, it works best for me since his voice is softer, with less interruptions. I did Vipassana which like zen focuses on breathing a lot, yet for PLR visualization is more relevant. To make the transition I found freely on the net a sound track on "Raja Yoga Meditation", that has done the trick for me. Once you find a track that works for you then you can go back to the hypnotherapist. Hope that helps, cheers |

Me too found relaxation easy. but going to trance seems to be tough. I heard that people with high IQ could not use hypnosis? Is that true? should I give up inquisitive attitude to use hypnosis? |

The IQ thing is NOT true.
If by "inquisitive attitude" you mean youi mean thinking/analyzing while trying to enter trance (conscious interference), then yes. |

Try a little exercise. Once you're relaxed enough, imagine that you're arriving at your home. Stop at the front door and 'see' as many details as you can -color, height, etc- then walk inside and again imagine you can see as many things as you would if you physically walk in the house. With your mind walk around your own familiar environment noticing as much as possible. Then imagine you're having dinner and try to feel the taste and smell of the food. Hopefully this will act as a 'rope' and pull the PLR images in. The key is not to question, try to fit, interpret or judge, just let it flow and go with it. A PLR is very vivid and generally some sort of feelings are present. You may see a person's face but it feels like it's you. |

Sometimes, experienced meditators can be the hardest person to hypnotize! Although the states of hypnosis and meditation are very similar, there's a critical difference: Hypnosis requires a connection with another human being, while meditation is a solitary pursuit. And very often, meditators end up falling back on what's familiar as soon as the session begins, which in your case is to focus on your breathing. My advice is to "unlearn" what you have learned, approach hypnosis with a beginner's mind and let the hypnotist guide the session. If you need something to focus on, focus on the hypnotist's voice... or even the hypnotist's breathing. Either would help you get out of your own head and begin building rapport with your hypnotherapist. |

Forgive me for asking but do you generally like to be in control? If so it may be difficult for you to give up that control in the sessions. It would be a good idea to stop worrying about how far into the hypnosis you are and trust your therapist to deal with that. If you can't trust them then maybe you need to look for someone who inspires your confidence.(see the rant and rave on choosing your therapist) A good therapist should be able to talk to you about your reservations and use them to effect your successful session. Good luck |

One key question is "What were your expectations of a trance? What did you think it was going to be like?" |
