Hello everyone I am new to the forum.
I have been doing self-hypnosis on and off since I was about 12. Every now and then when I listen to an audio tape (generally a new one and generally a deep relaxation session) I get a tingling sensation in my head and sometimes left shoulder. It is so relaxing but alarming at the same time?
Anyway. I have tried several times to create some sort of association with a word like 'tingle'. And I cannot.
I have two questions: 1. Why do I only sometimes get this feeling. 2. How do I create the association
Thanks, Lynx3ffect |

I have clients that sometimes experience the tingling in the way you describe.
Best guess is that stress can cause muscular tension and deep hypnosis allows those muscles to relax. Also, circulation increases with appropriate hypnotic depth.
The tingling may be a result of these two factors.
I do not see a reason to associate the tingling... instead what about using terms regarding physical/muscular relaxation/rest/recuperation/rejuvenation?? |

Hello. Thanks for the reply.
Can you explain more about how circulation increases with appropriate hypnotic depth and how this could cause the tingling sensation. Although I see how being more stressed could cause this feeling, i am not convinced. I have been really stressed and not experienced this.
And as for associating the tingling. This is because it relaxes me even more. Its after this feeling that I start to really visualize things too.
Btw i should mention I am a psychology student. So if anyone needs to describe psychological or biological factors that could ease in explaining this. please do.
Thanks, Lynx3ffect |

The tingling feeling is unlikely to be reliably reproduced. So, relying upon associating with it would be a recipe for failure. While associating with words that allow for more flexibility in outcome will be more supportive to success.
You can research studies involving cortisol levels with hypnosis. Also search for hypnosis and "flushing" - that is also observable when seeing bloodshot eyes during good hypnotic depth. The bloodshot eyes recover within minutes of emerging.
Blood flow increases as muscles relax. This is seen in pain management studies using hypnosis. Healing is often improves with the blood flow and decreased cortisol levels.
If your stress is high enough, your self-hypnosis depth will be likely be compromised which reduces the relative amount of relaxation you will experience. This will affect your perceived signs of depth - including tingling or not.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. You have given me a lot to think about including studies to go and find.
