Hi guys,
I'm a new user here. I have recently had my first hypnosis session with a hypnotist. My hypnotist was nice and friendly with a soothing voice.
While I was 'in' the hypnotic state, I would get a bit annoyed at times because my concious mind would interfere and ask a question like "am I in the correct state" or "am I hypnotised". I tried to get back to a focus state whenever this happened.
So, before I go on. Is that normal? For a first time session? It's not like I am skeptical, I just think I am overly analytical and unfortunately these were some of the things I was asking myself.
However, I do feel towards the end of my first session I did begin to relax a lot more and let the concious mind go free a lot more.
Now... the IMPORTANT part.
I was instructed to 'wake up' or similar when we reach 1, counting back from 5. Just before we started counting, I Was asked to take everything we had gone over in the session and place it within my mind. Perhaps I tried to visualise this happening or something... but what came to happen was a little scary.
As we started to count from 5, there was a feeling from around the top of my forehead. It wasn't a pain or anything that hurt. You could say it was a little uncomfortable, but probably only because I didn't know the cause.
So while we start counting at 5, I am experiencing this sensation from around the top of my forehead, and it felt like it was 'connected' to around the middle of my brain. Like there was some sort of 'force' or something, between the foreheard and the middle of my head/mind. Hard to describe.
Meanwhile, this kept intensifying. As we kept counting down closer to 1, I conciously became aware that my heart was beating quickly. It was speeding up. I was quite relaxed the whole time during the session, literally ONLY when we began to count from 5 to 1 this all came into effect. My heart rate just started climbing rapidly.
On top of that, as we got closer to 1, it's like I became more aware because I realised that my eyes were fluttering. I'm not sure if that is the 'right' word, but it wasn't like open close open close, they were still shut but just fluttering around like I was having a 'concious' dream or something like that.
I basically opened my eyes before we hit 1. I opened them at 2, the instructor still counted to 1 anyway, but I did open them early.
I was thinking of opening them at '5' but I wanted to 'hold' out. But as I said, this feeling was intensifying, coupled with fluttering eyes and an increasing heart beat, I forced myself to open my eyes at '2' because quite simply, I didn't know what was happened and I just felt myself spiraling deeper into this feeling... you could say that I was a little worried about 'being sucked in'.
Really sorry to sound silly... the whole process was fine (other than my concious mind asking me "am I hypnotised" towards the beginning) but just the 'coming out' phase really got me pumped up for some reason.
The BEST I could explain it, was 'sleep paralysis'. I once was sleep paralysed and the same thing essentially happened, my heart rate went up up up because naturally, I was freaking out that I couldn't 'move'. Although, this time I COULD move, but this is just the best way I could describe the feeling.
I guess it could have been 'sleep paralysis'... maybe my mind fell asleep while in the hypnotic state but my concious mind lay awake the whole time, then when it came time to get out it started freaking out? I really don't know.
Helps? Tips? Advice? Comments? |

Questioning "am I hypnotized" is normal for a first session. People come in with different expectations. And doing hypno on purpose is new for people. Just a little learning curve.
From you description of the rest, I would conclude that you were just getting deeper. Eyelid flutter is common with more depth. Especially for a first session. And, if you had a bad experience with "sleep paralysis" in the past, you may have triggered a fear response within yourself when getting more hypnotic depth. Which would explain the elevated heart rate and opening your eyes early.
Based upon that past experience you were worried about being "sucked in" to something "too deep". That would explain your heightened "resistance" extra conscious mind activity during the first portion of session) too. Getting too deep, by the way, is not possible with an experienced hypnotist by your side.
What you are describing as "sleep paralysis" would probably be called an Esdaile state. That is attainable intentionally with a hypnotist. And a well trained hypnotist can teach you how to get there as well as get out of it on your own.

Wow, Patrick! What a fantastic reply! Seriously, thank you!
I think you are right about me relating the experience to 'sleep paralysis' as (memory is foggy) I think that I thought (while it was happening) something along the lines of "oh no this is happening again" and it sort of frightened me.
But, what I am more concerned about is why suddenly I was 'getting deeper' or why even such a 'thing' happened when at that point I was just about to leave the hypnotic state. I would have expected it to happens perhaps mid way or earlier on, not literally right at the end when I am meant to come out and not go deeper?
In regard to the Esdaile state (I will read up on this right after this post), is that state caused intentionally by the hypnotist or can it be caused by myself? As I feel my hypnotist had nothing to do with me entering such a state (which is why I feel a bit worried, because it almost came to be from no where).
I wonder... what would have happened had I not opened my eyes early... had I left them closed and let whatever intensity build up. It felt like if I had left it for that extra '1' second longer that I would have been too 'deep' to listen to the instructions to wake up, because literally, I was going 'deeper' as we were counting down!!
So thanks VERY much for your reply, I guess I still have a bit of a concern, but you really did help! I Seriously appreciate it, really! And thanks for clearing up that it is normal to ask yourself if you are hypnotised haha, I felt like I was ruining it for myself!

You're welcome. Anything for an Aussie! :)
Depth just happens as you go through the process... perhaps just getting more comfort/trust with the hypnotist allowed you to increase depth then... difficult to say why.
Esdaile can be caused intentionally, but it can also happen spontaneously. It's usually considered "too deep" for hypnosis work. But, it has some good uses as well. Esdaile is a great state to achieve for pain management.
If you level of relaxation was running "against" your fear... a few basic outcomes were likely:
1. You would override the fear and get deeper relaxed.
2. The fear would override your relaxation and you would emerge. Like you did by opening your eyes early.
3. You would continue to deepen your hypnotic state (hypnosis is not tied to being relaxed) while continuing to have the anxious sense you described (probably the physical sense you had in your head).
For some people, once they reach Esdaile they would lose any anxiousness. But, some do not.
For future hypno work, you want to address that fear and be done with it. Letting the hypnotist know about it will help both of you.

Hi Patrick!
Thanks very much again!
I will definitely be following your suggestion and informing my hypnotist. I wanted to let them know that I was a little "scared" of what happened in the end (as going deeper when meant to do the opposite freaked me out) but I just didn't want to upset them as I felt it was not their fault. But in hindsight, I should be trying to build a better relationship and hiding things won't help!
Again, your help is very much appreciated! Have a great day! I'm off to do some reading on hypnosis. I am studying to be an Electrical engineer... but the mind is just so much more fascinating! I will eventually try and learn how to get myself into hypnosis and allow myself to talk to my subconcious on a regular basis. Might sound weird, but I want to 'communicate' as much as I can with the subconcious!
Gee, I got into a bit of a writin spree! Thanks once more! |

What stands out to me is that when told to think about the things that you had discussed, you did exactly that. You were deep already, so the suggestion created an effect that you could tangibly feel. This was self-reinforcing, driving you deeper, and triggering your fear reaction.
Relax! It's okay! It doesn't mean you did anything wrong, or that anything is wrong WITH you. It doesn't mean that your hypnotherapist did anything wrong. It just means that you had an experience. It was neither good nor bad, think instead of it as being instructive.
Just because you experienced that event this one time does not mean that you will experience exactly the same thing next time. But as Patrick mentioned, do tell your hypnotherapist, so they can be on the lookout for it, and react accordingly if you start down that path again. Or, so they can take steps to avoid it next time. Or, better yet, get to the root of it.
