Someone recently asked me this question and I found that I couldn't give a clear opinion, other than that it might help. Could self hypnosis i.e. relaxation, visualization etc be used to treat schizophrenia, with but eventually without meds, or are schizophrenics too lacking in control over their thought processes to be able to independently treat it?

I have had a schizophrenic client (with a doctor referral) for several months now.
My client does not change her personality, but hears other "personalities" as voices in her mind. When she started, all of these voices (some male and some female) were hostile towards her.
To her the sound their voices make is just as real as the voices she hears from real people.
She started with five distinct voices and several more benign and vague voices. Through a 'dissociated dialogue' process have got it down to only one hostile voice as of the most recent session.
The last voice will be worked with in her next appointment.
The number of different voices has reduced, but, a couple of the hostile voices that we worked with did NOT go away. They became friendly and are now working WITH her in a helpful way within her life.
**Based upon this single experience, and the observations of one of my hypnosis students that works at a state mental hospital, I can offer this limited opinion.
At this point, I believe that schizophrenia can have physiological roots. Just like Autism, which I've worked with a number of times.
But, this core cause can become exacerbated through their life struggles. Essentially creating some behavioral issues that branch off of the core issue.
Quality hypnosis and advanced techniques appear capable of addressing these branch issues and help the client manage living with the core issue.
I do not believe self-hypnosis can help these individuals w/o first using hypnosis to build a foundation for the self-hypno work. |
