Hey there, I'm have began studying hypnosis recently, and today a question popped up in my mind as I watched a video of the great Gil Boyne. In my understanding, a person can open their eyes while in hypnotic state and remain in that state. To remove the state, you would have to suggest that they return to their full awareness. As I watched a video called Exciting The Imagination, in "Self-Hypnosis for Self Improvement" from Gil Boyne, I notice he only tells the people to open their eyes and they return to normal. Can someone please explain it to me? Thank you |

People can emerge on their own when eyes are open. They can be distracted by what they see. That's why it's easier to hypnotize w/ eyes closed. Some people are better at being hypnotized and are less likely to emerge on their own. People are able to practice hypnosis and stay at-depth with eyes open..
By the way, people can emerge on their own even with eyes closed. Depth is always fluctuating. |

Thanks for answering, but I meant he used the open eyes suggestion to bring them out of the hypnotic state. |

You can use anything for emerging...
"As you hear the car alarm going off outside, you calmly and comfortably come back to your normal state of wakefulness"... |

yes, but in that sentence you said "you come back to your normal state of wakefulness". What Gil Boyne did in that video was "As you hear the car alarm going off outside, you will open your eyes", as a mean to emerge them |

Maybe I'm not clear on what you're asking.....
They open their eyes and it is likely they are still in a state of hypno (post-hypnotic) for a minute or so as they emerge themselves.... |

Sorry, I'll try to explain it better. As far as I know, if we intend to emerge someone we specify that we want them to return to the normal state of awareness. If we just tell them to open their eyes, they remain in the hypnotic state, with their eye opened. Gil Boyne, in on of his videos, was emerging people by telling them to open their eyes, no mention of returning to their normal state or feeling awake etc. It puzzled me |

Everyone, if left alone long enough, will emerge on their own. How long it takes, from a few seconds to several minutes, depends on the person, their expectations, their experience with hypnosis, and their intentions.
With eyes open, they will tend to emerge, on their own, even quicker.
I would not recommend emerging as quickly as Gil did in the video. (I've seen lots of his videos. He was a great hypnotist and instructor). I've seen clients get a headache if the emerge too quickly. Not many, but enough for me to spend 10 seconds doing some emerging suggestions prior to opening eyes and emerging further. |

So, maybe the way that he said it, caused the expectation in the person that they should "awake"? Because it was instantaneous, he would say "open your eyes" and then proceed "so, how did it feel", etc etc |

It's possible he had worked with that individual before, which would also have an effect.
Also, the person is not necessarily "out" of hypnosis during his post-hypnotic interview (how did it feel, etc). That that post-hypno time is a good time to continue giving suggestions. |

It didn't appear like he had worked with them before, from their reactions. And I am aware that if you take them out of the hypnotic state they actually take a while (from 30 to 90 seconds I believe) to fully come out of it. But he only told them to open their eyes, therefore they would be in the hypnotic state until they snapped out of it on their own. Yet they seemed fully awake and normal after opening their eyes. Also, I am aware that he was great, he is actually second in my top list, after Dave Elman. Which is why I bothered to ask about it. Thank you |

Erickson almost invariably would wake his subjects by merely picking up where he left off on a conversation before inducing trance. If it's done right, the subject can switch gears very fast and it assists in producing amnesia for the trance.
