Hello I'm new here, but I hope you can help me with a problem. I have always done self hypnosis and got some very good results, however some hypnotists have said that self hypnosis cannot exist because you need a hypnotist to bypass the critical factor of the subject.
What do you think? If self hypnosis isn't real, then I am very confused because what I've been doing has certainly got great results... but they do make a strong argument...
Please help |

In many respects they are right- yet it comes down to how you sequence the programming- having been hypnotized 1000s of times both with a guild and by my self- and being connected to an EEG- on a number of occasions- and getting the same readings- then I think they might be room to challenge such an idea.
If you was to take the Dave Elman induction- which is my main induction for doing self hypnosis- with a few slight modifications- then I have had some good results- the thing is thou- don't take other peoples experiences on.. look at it just as interesting take and then g create your own experience you will learn a lot more and you might find that sometime other people are just fixed in there own dogma-

If it has consciousness it's already in a trance. |

You do NOT need a hypnotist to bypass critical faculty. A hypnotist facilitates the work to be done AFTER the client is in hypnosis.
Self-hypnosis allows for limited self-facilitation (if that's a word?) once you reach your target state.
The statement "all hypnosis is self-hypnosis" is a generalization, but essentially true.
A person can be hypnotized (intentionally or unintentionally) by TV, radio, a book, movie, job, a candle flame.... no hypnotist required. |

You can get the induction from Dave Elman's (copyrighted) book "Hypnotherapy". It's on Amazon. |

Depends on the quality of the audio session. If an audio has many different deepening tricks and caters for a wide range of people, and not forgetting the breathing.... concentrating on the breathing is very powerful, and sort of lets the subconscious mind have more energy. |

As a subject with analytical tendencies, I wholehearted agree with the breathing part. If you focus too intently on the words being spoken, or looking for "signs" you are going into trance, or trying to elicit clear images in your mind, you may unintentionally keep yourself from going any further than a light trance.
My hypnotherapist reccommended that when listening to a hypnosis audio, I simply listen and focus all my attention on my breathing, until my conscious mind naturaly lets go of even this activity. Once at this point of relaxation, you can then turn your focus to the changework portion.
She said that activities such as counting, consciously controlled imagery, etc. can focus your attention, but also tend to keep the conscious mind in the foreground, especially for analyticals. Concentrating on your breathing, however, requires very little mental effort, is naturally relaxing, *and* gives your mind something it can focus on.
It's really helped me get past several of the mental blocks I've had. |
