Health Ministry to hypnotists: Stop helping clients explore past lives By Haaretz Health Correspondent
Israeli hypnotists were told to refrain from helping clients explore past lives, following a recent decision on the matter by a special Health Ministry advisory committee.
The Advisory Committee on the Law on Hypnosis made the ruling following complaints by clients who said that they had sustained serious emotional damage because of reincarnation hypnosis sessions.
Israel has several experts on reincarnation hypnosis, who give sessions that aim to "discover who they were in past lives," as Dr. Lianna Sofer defines her treatments. "The reincarnation hypnosis allows us to return to the prenatal stage." Advertisement
The ministry decided not to completely ban the practice, in keeping with the decision to allow a host of other practices which are not recognized as therapeutic by modern medicine but are believed by some to be remedial.
But Dr. Alex Aviv, from the Abarbanel Mental Health Center in Bat Yam, says that hypnosis and reincarnations have nothing to do with one another. "This is a mystical practice for people who believe in reincarnation. We've seen a number of cases where practitioners tried to perform this on patients and things went bad," said Aviv, who heads the advisory committee.
The ministry's ban on reincarnation hypnosis applies only to authorized hypnosis therapists, whose practice is recognized by the ministry.
Discussion on reincarnation hypnosis began two years ago within the ministry and ended with a explicit ban on offering the practice or for hypnotists to present themselves as experts in the field.
One of the cases which brought on this decision concerns a 23-year-old man from the center of the country who had retained the services of a clinical psychologist authorized to give hypnosis treatments. The patient suffered from depression after breaking up with his girlfriend.
The psychologist offered reincarnation hypnosis, suggesting that he might have experienced an event in a past life which is now making it difficult for him to let go of his partner.
The session turned south when the man became emotionally stuck in an experience which made him feel as though he was enclosed in a coffin. He began to gasp for breath. After the session the man suffered repeated panic attacks and respiratory problems, and he was referred for medical and psychiatric care.
"The patient suffered from a false memory which had been implanted into him and needed correction," Aviv, who treated him, said.
But Sofer said correcting problems "which began in an earlier life helps correct life in the present." She said she cured a woman from chronic neck pains after "discovering she had been decapitated in a previous life." |

Wow. Looks like PLR is a dangerous business. I'm guessing you would agree with the Health Ministry's analysis, Gil? I caught some of your posts on one of the other PLR threads and you seem not to be a very big fan of the process, especially for therapuetic purposes. I have been fascinated by PLR and the potential that these 'recalled' memories might be true for several years now.
If these memories are merely constructs of the imagination, isn't it possible that under proper and qualified guidance they could still possibly serve a positive therapuetic purpose? There are certainly lots of different regimens of therapy therapy that require a patient to alter his or her way of thinking, reinterpretting experiences so they cease eliciting negative reactions. Is attaching negative behaviors or habits to a supposed past life in order to allow a client to dismiss them necessarily a bad thing?

Hopefully Gil will answer too..
A properly trained hypnotist would have been able to deal with the problem the person in the article experienced.
Even if there is such a thing as past lives, there is no reason for a hypnotist to go there. It only serves to harm the reputation of hypnosis.
Any problems a person is facing can be dealt with while referencing their present life and it's experiences. |

Response---It is inappropriate for you to guess what I agree with or not. Just because I post a news story of direct interest to readers of this forum, you use me to justify your use of PLR. Unfair and self-serving tactics! I will repeat what I have always said about my position on PLR. I never used it in therapy and I never taught it. For the very, very few who ever requested it, I cheerfully referred them to a therapist who used it as a therapy tool. When I am ready to debate the issue, I will look you up. Until then, I remain--- A Friend, Gil Boyne |

I apologize for making such a guess, Gil--it seemed logical and appropriate enough from the tone of some of your other posts in the past life regression section of this forum-- i.e., "Ask any licensed mental health worker if they use past life regression as a therapy tool. Ninety eight per cent will laugh in your face." My intention was not to offend or falsely assume, and I'm sorry if I did so.
I'm also not looking to start a debate, or to use you to justify my use of PLR--in fact I've only fairly recently been introduced to the concept and I am still in the information-gathering process. You have obviously had a great deal of experience in this field and the intention of my questions was to determine whether, despite what I thought might be your overall negative assessment of PLR, you found anything redeeming about the process.
Patrick said above that PLR only hurts the reputation of hypnosis, and that there is no good reason to go there, but I can't help but be intrigued by the possibility that some of these memories could be real, and maybe even verifiable. Do you think it is more potentially dangerous than potentially rewarding?
Thanks to you and Patrick for your helpful responses, Spoon

Hello Spoon, Apology accepted! Just a misunderstanding. I no longer express personal opinions on PLR as it is too controversial. Gil Boyne |

Thanks for posting that Gil! It sounds like there may have been some problems due to a lack of knowledge and experience both in hypnosis and past life work. |
