I have a friend who has hypnotized various people. I relax, and lay , and try to concentrate, but I try to imagine, and pretend. but I am not hynotized. What am i doing wrong? What do you suggest i could do so that I can be hypnotized easier? Any methods or something/ Thanks. Mich.

Could be your trying too hard. Hypnosis is really just a very relaxed state. Like when you read a book or watch tv and you shut out everything around you. For some, it does take practice. I did not get it the first time either. It was hard for me to allow myself to relax. Also, many of my clients were surprised to find out that hypnosis was nothing like they had expected. They did not lose consciousness, control or float around my office (just kidding). Try some nice quiet music or nature sounds tapes/cds. Make yourself comfortable with no interuptions. Clear your mind and just allow the sounds to relax your body and mind. If a thought comes into your mind, just let it go. Expect nothing and you may be very surprised. Good luck. mindmjk

Anyone who is not mentally ill can be hypnotized, but not necessarly by the same induction methods. Obivously your friend is not schooled in the various methods or how to determine which method to use.

The only reason a person cannot be hypnotized is either fear or misconceptions. If ample time was not spent to alleviate either of those two reasons you will not be hypnotized. The other thing is that you may have been, but did not think you were because the state is different than most people have come to believe. Rick

I would like to endorse pharmnotist's comments. I always spend a fair bit of time with a new client first allaying his or her fears and misconceptions about hypnosis and then eliciting from her or him what expectations they have of the hypnotic state. Even so, "I'm not sure that I was really hypnotised ... I heard every word you said" is a very common response after termination of the first session. Yes, you were supposed to; really deep "somnambulistic" trance is rare - perhaps 20-30% of subjects may eventually enter that level of hypnosis. But it doesn't matter. Light hypnosis is equally effective for most purposes (don't try it for full anaesthesia, though!). Leo

All the answers you have been offered to date are valid. I would add one more after reading your post. "A friend of mine has hypnotixed several persons" Not much of a recommendation I'm afraid. You may well feel that this friend in NOT a person of authority, and is not the sort of person you want messing with your mind!!! Not that that degrades the friendship, but you may do better choosing a proffessional if you have a valid reason to use Hypnosis, and if not, why let your friend keep trying?

Just stop "trying" and do it. Just breath deeply and let yourself go loose & limp, just like a worn-out dish-rag. Pretend you are daydreaming.

Dear Sir, I beg to differ with your statement. You are sadly mistaken.Where did you get your numbers from? Virtually every client Elman worked with was in somnambulism. In reality, it's probably the opposite of what you stated. Rare indeed to NOT be able to go into somnambulism. All the Best~ |

Hi Take note that most people do not even know whether they are hypnotised or not. I would suggest that a person would almost certainly enter a light trance under the majority of situations Best Wishes Mike |
