Hello Everyone,
As someone curious about the history of hypnosis, I am trying to obtain information about who trained Mr. Gil Boyne. I cannot find any information about how he first got into hypnosis. He seems to be an outstanding contributor to the field of hypnosis.
As a teacher, I try to inspire my students by using the lives of outstanding people in their fields to help guide and inspire.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Ed
Gil is a member of this forum - I am sure if you send him a message he would be happy to fill in any history gaps.

Hello Edgerton, When I began my full time career as a hypnotherapist in 1954 in Los Angeles, there was ONE teacher in all of So. Calif. and all that he taught was past-life regression. That was the time of the immense interest in the book, "Bridey Murphy". I had been an amateur (avocational) hypnotist since I was a teen-ager and I plunged right in with nothing but overwhelming enthusiasm and a passion to help others. If you or anyone else will send me you email address, I will send you an email attachment of a twelve page interview that appears in the current issue of the Journal of the National Council for Hypnotherapy. Details and highlights of my career are in the interview. I see you are in London and I am in N. London (Islington) perhaps we can have lunch sometime soon. With Respect, Gil Boyne

Here is some additional information.
HOW I BUILT A CAREER
I founded the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners in 1980 as a Calif. non-profit professional organization. I have held 23 Annual International Conferences in the Los Angeles area attracting an average of 450 hypnotherapists each year. In addition, I have taught regularly scheduled classes at a wholly owned commercial bldg.in Glendale, Ca. for nine months each year for 38 years. At this time, I teach Master Classes to practicing Therapists. My "Hypnotherapy as a Career" training program consists of 250 classroom hours as follows; Course 101--Basics of Hypnosis--50 hrs.(with student practice of many inductions) Course 201--Hypnotherapy-Principles and Practice--100 hrs.-- Course 301---Transforming Therapy (advanced Clinical Hypnotherapy) ---50 hrs.--- Course—401--Hypnotherapy in Healing and Pain Control--50 hrs. There is supervised practice in every class and training films--live therapy DVDs with explanation as to my therapeutic choices and interpreting clients responses--and individual bound manuals for each course. I wrote a hypnotherapy textbook and spent years vigorously marketing it, developed a line of training films and live therapy sessions and marketed them world wide. Every member of every class received a copy of my book and at least two DVDs. I consistently charged less and gave more to build a reputation. (if you build it, they will come). People make choices on how and where to spend their time energy and money
I have toured and taught in 14 Major cities in the USA, in some of them I appeared repeatedly. I made five international tours--teaching in the UK, Ireland, Australia. New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Tokyo. I built a reputation not only by my work but by building a national and international base of those who knew and practiced my methodologies and philosophy. . I repeatedly send press releases to media outlets and in foreign countries, Often, I hire a press agent to promote my appearance in advance. As a result, where ever I offer a Master Class, it is always been successful. I have averaged 45 students per class in Auckland, 95 in Sydney. I have had 250 tv, radio and print media interviews around the world. I have given hundreds of free lectures to civic organizations and charities to attract clients. I have made every effort to network with prominent and successful figures in the profession around the world so that they might help me create classes in their geographic areas of influence. Finally, I partnered and shared income with my associates in foreign countries. In short, I worked to build a reputation., circled the globe to spread the reputation and reaped the benefit of many years of effort.
This is a self-directed form of self employment and you must be your own press agent and continue working daily at developing and refining your image and reputation throughout your career. Many won't and many just don't know how.
I hope this gives some ideas of how you can create the career success you desire. To those of a newer generation, the opportunities are greater than ever but you must seize the opportunities. Don't be content with sending out brochures or getting a squib in your hometown newspaper or posting a few notices on internet forums. You must respect yourself, your profession and your peers and devote your life to your passion.

Hello Edgerton et all, On rereading, I see that I did not answer the original question. So here goes, After several years of practice,(self-trained) I sought out psychotherapy training. My first one was an internship at the Institute of Therapeutic Psychology, Director, Everett Shostrom, PhD. and Professor of Psychology at University of Calif. at Irvine,Ca. I attended for eight weeks, 5 days each week and spent each weekend at Lake Arrowhead. Ca., in special group programs. This was a total of 57 days, eight hours per day. Every day, I was in a group therapy plus three sessions of personal therapy each week and lectures and films were presented daily. The director and staff had two words for hypnotherapy, "too directive", but they had no training or real understanding of hypnosis/hypnotherapy. I had some benefits from the experience but I did not find any great superiority in psychotherapy methods. I felt more knowledgeable and the greatest benefit for me was their promotion of Gestalt Therapy. I was encouraged to go to Esalen Institute where Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt Therapy, was in residence and giving 5-day workshops to professional therapists. In the next two years I attended 5 workshops (25 days) and even had several therapy sessions with Dr. Perls. Did I become a Gestaltist? NO! Gestalt Therapy is non-analytic and my work is termed Hypnoanalysis. However,I did acquire some techniques and principles that I was able to merge with my work. Although I did training with several other major figures in the psychotherapy world, I only became more convinced that hypnotherapy was a more direct, short term therapy to uncover and bring resolution to a very wide range of human problems, issues and goals. Did I become a better therapist as a result of the expenditure of my time, money and energy? ABSOLUTELY ! The greatest reward was confirming my understanding that hypnotherapy is vastly different from almost every form of psychotherapy and extraordinarily effective when practiced by a committed, experienced and well trained therapist. |

Hi Gil I started out in San Diego for my first really formal training. I was however refered to your school in Glendale Ca. I retook a basic Hypnosis course from you and decided to stay on through 301 as well. I have enjoyed working in the field as being curious I did take a course from Al down the road Krassner but felt I was back sliding a bit, I worked for a couple of years with James Russell a very different approach theraputically, but enjoyed it better than the other. I find that I always have reverted back to Gil Boynes style and whenever asked where I trained it was with you and have always highly recomended your school over all others. I wanted to stop by there 3 years ago when I was in town but did not have the oportunity to do so. I haven't seen you since 1990 or 1991 but did speake with you on the phone about 1997, you helped me with an issue in my practice and have always suported your students. I just want to say thanks for being there. Sincerely Mike Rivers |
